I agree. I was more talking about his acting I had issues with at first, not his character. I liked his beef with Picard right off the bat, when really his beef was with himself, being stuck in the trauma of his wife's death. His trying to describe linear time to the wormhole aliens when they point out he's actually stuck in a single period of time... that was brilliant. As he finds new purpose, and the wormhole discovery suddenly makes DS9 the most important location for the Federation, It's the best first episode of any Trek IMO. His emissary stuff was cool at first, but the whole Bajor thing wore on a bit long. The Defiant/bald head and Dominion War changed everything though, catapulted the show into another level. To be fair Picard is the captain of the Federation flagship, Sisko has been farmed out to what Starfleet thinks is a backwater post nobody wants, he's an emotionally damaged character after the death of his wife so I think Brooks playing him as more unstable with less gravitas worked pretty well.
Compared to the guy in your sig I think you could argue of course Sisko didnt have as well defined a character arc but thats true for a lot of DS9 relative to Babylon 5.
I grew to love Sisko, he's right up there with Picard, Kirk and Sheridan for me. I also appreciated his early seasons far more in subsequent viewings. His dealings with Dukat were always gold, but my fav moment from him was with Garak (goat) and the Romulan deception thing (in the Pale Moonlight ep).
