MOst countries have exploitable weakness, including Canada. That is nothing new.

Trump also learned a very tough lesson as he has believed for decades that Tariffs were "beautiful" and the US would only win and benefit if he leveled them. He fully intended to level them on Canada and Mexico and China believing it would provide the US revenue that he could then use to offset his corporate tax cuts so the remaining republican deficit hawks would not block his tax cuts. But Trump instantly saw the Stock market reaction and realized he had to back off. So no, the tariff threat has no legs anymore. It is an empty threat.

I'm curious to see what he's going to propose. I don't think Trump has any unique goals, just unique methods of attaining those goals.

It seems like he's directed by USA's broader geopolitical future and what it needs to do to maintain its hegemony.To that end, acquiring Greenland and Canada is a no brainer. Vast resources, relatively defenseless and ripe for the taking. Leaving partisan politics aside, no matter who's at the helm, left or right, this is the direction America is going.

We have had relative peace for a very long time and I think we are starting to see the death throes of liberalism. If some sort of integration isn't met in the near future, peacefully, we will see some sort of annexation of greenland or Canada and it will be due to an existential threat regarding arctic armament, or lack thereof.

I'm not sure there's much Canada or Denmark/Greenland can do to prevent something like this from happening.

Originally, it was mostly due to fatigue from Harper and the conservatives. They had been in for quite a while, and people wanted a fresh look. Trudeau fit the bill. His youth and boyish good looks didn't hurt either. He's had extremely easy competition since then, facing off against conservatives that not even conservatives really liked. He has also benefitted from the unwavering devotion of progressives in big, electorally important cities. That's all changed. Conservatives now have a very strong leader that everyone likes, and it seems like damn near everyone, including a lot of his base, have finally had enough of Trudeau. Much like Harper, he's also hitting his expiration date. We don't have term limits up here, but we do tend to get fickle after while of the same leadership, and Trudeau is coming up to that due date.

If you listen to Trump for over two decades he HONESTLY believed Tariffs were the CURE for all that ailed the US deficit wise. He honestly believed the path to him getting his big promised tax cuts thru for the corporations and the rich, so that the few Tea Party Deficit hating Republicans would fall in line was Tariffs.

Trump honestly believed it was genius and no one else was willing to do it because they were all too nice to the US allies and others.

So he could not wait to prove it. He expected the Stock market to soar, as he thought tariffs brought riches and when the stock market reacted as it did, and there was instant talk of supply chain collapse in Auto/Airline, etc Trump got a wake up call.

It was then and THEN ONLY that he pretended all he was looking for from Canada was for them to cut the fraction of 1% to a fraction of a fraction of 1%. Even Heretic, who cups Trumps balls daily admitted Canada already made the border concession in December before Trump was sworn in, so the tariff threat after the fact was redundant and stupid.
