Tell me about it. I just don't want to put too much pressure on her. But as long as she is having fun, so do I.

Sounds awesome RCCOLA make sure and tell us how she does after the tournament......dont worry about the pressure....just try and keep her calm and relaxed as well as yourself.:D

Yea, she told me she was 'scared' of the tournament. I told her it was normal to be nervous but not to be scared. She knew as much, or more that all the other yellow belts.
But she is scared of the kids from Saint John, you see that is where Grand Master Chang's dojang is. He is the father of TKD in my part of the country and is an 8th Dan in TKD!
We watched the Karate Kid the other day for the 1st time and she LOVED it! LOL! But now she keeps asking me if I think anybody will cheap shot her the way the Kobra Kai did to Daniel!? LOL Kids!

I have an advice...if you take her to a MT gym...don't let her spar with you again!!! You'll get hurt!

dude leave it alone, If his daughter enjoys TKD then let her enjoy it.

just wondering does your tkd school do meditation and breathing excercises. u could try that to try to calm her down. i know it might be hard to focus.

i'm pretty sure most tkd schools practice meditation/breathing excersises before actual training.

yes that would be helpful, you could do it as you put her to bed, talk to her first about her day, what happened, what she is going to do tomorrow, etc. then "cue" her for meditation, quiet her down and have her close her eyes, then let her release all her tension from her head to toes, slow her heart and breatetc. when she is relaxed, ask her what her goal is? let it be the same everyday, then have her picture herself with the prize like the medal etc. how she'll feel etc. then talk to her about her training that day, what she learned, what she did, go through her favorite techniques, also her worst ones, then end on a high note. let her sleep. doing this regularly will reinforce her goals and teach more importantly how to achieve things if done properly be it materialistic or mental.

As long as you realize that THD does not have alot of self defense application in real life -
if she is there for fun or discipline it is great if not maybe try starting her at a MMA gym - They usually have kickboxing ,western boxing , Muay Thai and Jujitsu at these gyms so she can find her niche until she is ready to broadan her martial arts horizons.
as for her kicks being side stepped (I am not good with point sparring but this is what I do in MMA)
throw a jab or even just push your oppenents shoulder on the same side you want to kick then right behind it throw the kick (almost at the same time).

I don't know if they practise breathing or not but I will ask. Thanks for the advice!

Hey, whats the best way to clam her down while were at the tounament. She might get nervous while seeing the other combatants warming up. Breathing? Talking? Just take her somewhere so she can be quite?

Are you allowed leg kicks in TKD tourny?
If not.....BOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo!

Nope, sorry! Anything below the waist is off limits. My daughter's best kick is a standing side kick to the kidney area! It's hard as hell and quick too! :)

if tkd allowed low kicks it'll be a limping contest at the end of the day instead of a skillful kicking contest. every1 would just chop down and get their quads/shins destroyed.

That is good point. But... well... I still think a 10 yr old girl should do the TKD if she likes it. I may be biased, but I think a woman cannot handle a male offender whether she learned TKD or MT. I never fought an woman for from my common sense :D In my opinion, a woman should just surprise an attacker and run away from the situation - not fight back. So I thought there is no difference in MT and TKD for a woman? Well I may be biased and I may be a sexist but I'm a conservative man :)

Conservative and foolish....Stats show a woman is 80% more likely to escape an attempted sexual assault if she fights back AT ALL. (probably because the assaulter is somebody they know, as most assaults are) May you never teach that crap you spew to women who might get into a bad situation one day.

Yes, most guys who attack people/men or women are looking for an easy victim if you fight back with everythin you have chances are they will not want to continue..

Thats why the"typical just do what they want" holds true in alot of cases but not always.

I've put my daughter in TKD so, god forbid, if something ever happens she will be able to defend herself properly.
Weather it be a knee to the groin, an elbow shot to the mouth or a punch to the throat! It scares me to think about her in that situation but her being in TKD, helps give me peace of mind.
By the time she 16, she will be a black belt in TKD, and that puts me at ease.
In high school, us guys new all the chicks that were into martial arts. And we gave them the respect they deserved.
To be honest, I totally expect her to be able to pound me in a stand up fight when she's 16. And when she can, then she can start dating.

i like that you can start dating when you can whip my butt. LOL

i think tkd is a good style and sport for a girl. there was this girl kickboxing my teamate this weekend, my teamates 16-17 and is awesome but she was able to hit him somewhat. more so she had a 'tough' mentality which is much harder to teach. i am sure your daughter has learned this and will be even stronger as she ages.
