Economy Chinese startup DeepSeek hammers US stocks with cheaper open-source AI model

A lot of this equipment being bought by Nvidia is not being used for gen AI. It's being used for other purposes such as ad revenue and keeping users engaged which has been stated by many Big Tech firms.

So now the rabbit is out the hat and we all know the need was inflated and overstated. What next is anybody's guess.
NVIDIA AFIAK even doesn't produce radiation harderned chips..

If to make chip at least a bit radiation hardened you will need to use multiple technologies and enough space between transistors etc as sufficient layer of " insulation " as physical measure for bare minimum step....
Ofc xxxxxx other challenges for solid state semiconductors specialists . ....

I imagine it's much more economical to just harden the building rather than chips, given the costs these days.

According to statistical data from China’s National Fire and Rescue Administration, the rate of spontaneous fires in NEVs increased by 32 percent in the first quarter of 2024. This means that currently, an average of eight NEVs catch fire in China every day — nearly 3,000 a year.

The US government is filled with morons who know nothing about industry & innovation. Take a look at the background & education of US politicians, 99% of them are lawyers or political science majors, there's almost no one with a STEM background. These people have no idea of how technology & innovation work, what's needed to help out the tech sector, or even how to evaluate whether their plans are working. It's basically like handing a bunch of partial differential equations to some kids who can't do calculus, it's completely outside of their understanding and they have no way to make any sense of it. You basically get a case where the blind retards are leading a bunch of vulture capitalists whose main priority is mooching off of subsidies rather than innovating.

Now, take a look at the political leadership in China & Russia. Both of them have lots of STEM graduates in their government systems and a lot of their key organizations such as the ministry of energy or industry will have a STEM guy at the top or a bunch of STEM guys near the top who are running the show. These people actually have the knowledge & background to know what they're doing and how to get things moving & fix things when they ain't working. We don't have that, all we can do is throw money at the problem and pray.

There used to be something called the Office of Technology Assessment that was a nonpartisan office which helped members of congress understand science and technology. It existed from the 70's until 1995.

But, of course, the Republicans defunded it because it was against the ideals of the party. Thanks, Newt Gingrich.

Nvidia doesn't produce any chips, they don't own a fab.

They get their chips from TSMC and Samsung. Not sure if they get anything from GlobalFoundries

Ofc. While such chips should work in missiles and mobile stations too.
Vacuum lamps had some big pros and cons for this. For example they needed more space, element to heat catode etc coins. A lot of shit.
I had repaired some suff and had some DIY type toys using vacuum lamps... despite then I was young a bit normal and a bit retarded guy from hood.

China has 4x more people and a higher IQ on average. It's obvious what's going to happen in the next decades.
I warned you that it was better to cooperate with China instead of trying to hinder their development, but you didn't listen and now you're all screwed.

That's a good understanding of why things the way they are but this is one of the issues with Capitalism. People are taught that Capitalism brings forth innovation and that is correct but only to an extent. Capitalism's big flaw is that unless it has a profit motive behind it, it's hard to create innovation. I just think this is the beginning of what will end up being a recession ultimately. One of the ways I would think to compete with China would be to stop the education system that relies on loans and debt but that will not happen under any Repub or Liberal President.

Just got DeepSeek running and my GPU cranked up so as far as performance goes its fast but seems to be generating more of a load on my GPU RTX 3090ti. My LLama 9 billion model and DeepSeek was 14 billion model. Seem to run faster then LLama even with a larger model.

Even better why don't we inspire people to go into the engineerings and sciences? I know plenty of people who are stuck because they do not have opportunities to go to school. These are not slackers and they are smart just they unfortunately born poor and school costs a lot. You know there is a reason why they are dry humping H-1Bs because they cannot fill the jobs needed to compete. India provides schooling assistance if you meet specific requirements you can bet a ton of them are getting their education paid.

Well, legitimately pushing people in the sciences would require a real investment in education and American youth. But the nation doesn't want to invest in low income communities because we'll beat China's 4x population by relying on the choices of the upper 10% of the income bracket.

Then we'll complain about having to ship in qualified H-1B applicants.

Somehow, the upper 15% of the income bracket is all we need to outcompete countries with 4x our population.

I won't say the quiet part out loud.

oh look at shook americans
same happened when Japan overtook USA in 70s with its tech.
naturally, americans couldnt handle it so they curbed japanese exports to the point of them not being competitive anymore

but china is too big for that shit

while US has been bickering about trans people in bathrooms, chinese have been going full steam ahead with investments in tech sector

chinese cities already look like something out of blade runner, while american cities are either burning, filled with homeless or have unusable public transport
I believe we are an empire in decline and not wanting to accept that. Our politicians seem to be stuck in the denial stage of grief and absolutely determined to not do anything that would make us stronger and healthier as a nation. Just keep saying we're the best and pissing off more countries that we should be working with, that'll fix everything.

I looked for that information and everywhere it mentions that very report, without any direct links or hard data from the actual document. And honestly, coming from China, I don't think we will ever have access to that info, for better or worse.

The only thing I got from reputable sources is a massive recall of 97000 cars due to a fire hazard from a processor, without numbers of actual fires. It doesn't look good but the recall was only for cars sold in China, no exports. Maybe they're less strict with components for their domestic market.

What really catches my attention is that you have very sparse reports of chinese cars catching fire in Europe, Latin America and other foreign markets. Considering that BYD alone exports hundreds of thousands of cars yearly, it doesn't seem that they have a worse fire record outside of China than other EV makers.

I took the plunge myself and bought an Ora. Not perfect but it's an excellent car for its price bracket, and works great with my (also made in China) solar panels. I run it basically for free.

And of course DeepSeek is now dealing with security issues.

DeepSeek on Monday said it would temporarily limit user registrations “due to large-scale malicious attacks” on its services.
The grammatical error in the title makes me angrier than the hack.

Its = possessive, as in "Its editor is useless."

It's = It is. As in "It's a bad editor."
