Economy Chinese startup DeepSeek hammers US stocks with cheaper open-source AI model

According to statistical data from China’s National Fire and Rescue Administration, the rate of spontaneous fires in NEVs increased by 32 percent in the first quarter of 2024. This means that currently, an average of eight NEVs catch fire in China every day — nearly 3,000 a year.

Probably using refurbished cells <lol>

from my initial testing, deepseek appears to be the real deal. I used some production level software that had a bug and I let it figure out the bug, and sure enough, it found the solution, which was similar to chatgpt/grok

Much of the hype around deepseek is based on unsubstantiated "claims" by it's creators. That said, AI models aren't really able to be monopolized and will end up stolen and freely distributed. Compute power is a hard resource, but it will get cheaper and cheaper.

There is no way companies or nations can have an "edge" on AI..

Stanford Phd researcher just made a 2 billion parameter model could run on cellphones on a larger computer using compute time for 30 dollars lol it can match OpenAi 1 model in performance in math and science. Things are backing down fast for Sam Altman and Elon Musk trillion dollar AI efforts.

I don't trust Deepseek one bit. Half the tat I ordered from China from Aliexpress or Temu has been pure garbage, a simple phone charger nearly started a fire and I'm supposed to believe they've mastered AI? Not buying it.

Deepseek has been banned from my uni because they found it incapable of saying anything negative about China and pushing far right policies in the west in equal measure.

you do realize there is a difference between cheap shit you're buying and cutting edge tech developed by a 7 billion dollar chinese hedge fund? Chinese have mastered much more than AI by now, and things are only going to get worse for USA & EU.

Also don't be a cheap stake and buy a proper phone charger - I recommend ugreen GaN chargers
spoiler alert: they're made in china (as is 90% stuff made these days)

By "mastered", you mean copying and pasting ChatGPT right?

Lol at deepsheet. They have nothing on Elon Cucks.

This is a stupid take since most of all research comes from China at the moment. It’s actually the opposite because we are the ones stealing ideas right now.

You can google which universities are leading peer reviewed research and it’s fairly obvious where we stand in the technology battle.

China is basically living a few decades while we decide if trains are good or not.

Not all research is of the same quality, and number of articles isn't a great measure. What those articles are on matters a lot.

It doesn’t matter what metric you use. China is ahead by miles. Can you find any field where this isn’t the case? And the quality angle doesn’t make sense they also rank the highest in the top 10 metric

It took them only 30 years to smash everyone

Chip design and fabs. Very impressive progress but no where near cutting edge. Jet engines, they still rely on Russia.

A lot of China's problems are on the engineering side more than actual science and research, but you can't separate those two things in the industries we're talking about.

Note I didn't say anything about quality. You get what you pay for, China has low quality and better quality stuff, just like any other country.

While hrok may be the top right note, been using deepseek for development, and it’s darn solid. Not sure hope much i can get away with a free account, but it sure is convenient and seemingly limitless on the amount of queries. Between deepseek and grok, i don’t have to pay and that’s a win

if they just copied chatgpt, it wouldn't be better than it.
they have published all their papers/research so anyone can take a look at how they achieved their breakthrough. they are hiding nothing.

also you convienently forget that chatgpt, copilot, gemini and every other american AI scrapes the internet for training material - they give 0 fucks about copyright or stealing peoples personal work.
