Media Charles Oliveira talks about fighting without glasses: "Im 50% blind without them"

As someone who wears glasses, and doesnt have the best vision either, its really the first time i ever notice someone wear glasses all the way to the ring. When i take my glasses off it takes me time to adjust to not having them on. If i had to fight without glasses, its no problem, but I'd at least give my eyes some time to adjust. He wears them all the way to the ring,so maybe he really cant see,and is afraid of tripping or something. Thats crazy. Id def get Lasik then.
That’s a good point. I’m really curious what his diopter numbers are. Those first 10-30 minutes after taking off glasses or contacts you feel blind as a bat, Oliveira is just an anomoly and insane fighter

Can he not put contacts in?
When I fought, am and pro.. during fighter meetings, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota and Ca athletic commissions literally told us to not step into the cage with contacts on. Some get lasik, but that's cutting slits into your eye, and it's not a permanent fix, have to get multiple surgeries over the course of time as vision decreases. A lot of fighters who constantly pressure when fighting, are doing so for style reasons but also because when fighting with poor vision, the closer you remain to your opponent, the easier it is to see them clearly. Only place I ever fought with my contacts in was in Canada for Firas's now defunct Fight Night MMA org.

Lasiked Oliveira is god, too powerful, too damn dangerous.

That's why he wants to close the distance asap, marching towards the blurry silhouette of his opponent, to see him better.

It somehow makes him more likable and relatable

Also this is close combat. Almost any other sport would suck to participate in with bad vision. Not martial arts tho
I played my freshman yr of college football without my contacts.. as a fucking weak side (man to man, on an island) cornerback. Didn't get one int that season but never gave up a td over 10 yards, because I literally just keyed off the receiver and situation regarding to down plus distance, not the qb or shifts, because I couldn't see shit. I had to play bump and run on every down just so I could see the receiver at the snap of the ball.

"If i take off the glasses, I can only see 50% but it never hindered me in a fight. God blesses me so much that i can see normal in the fight, but if i take them off in the street, im blind"

Damn...

Dude, imagine Olives with Lasik! 20.20 vision Olives would be born!

...Contacts?

Nah. I can barely spar/roll with contacts. Back when I used to train consistently, I'd always lose one like once every other week. I could only imagine during a real fight.

Actually, I think I remember Bas mentioning how he lost his contacts during the Randleman fight. I mean, can it be done? Of course. But there's a pretty good chance you're gonna lose at least one contact lens. Might as well just pay for lasik.

I know in some sports, playing with contacts is banned, its also kind of dangerous given what could happen to the eyes during the fight/game. That being said, why hasn't he gotten lasik?

It's not that weird. I'm the same way. Can see pretty well up close in a fight. But in every day life, I'm blind as fuck without glasses/contacts lol.

Dude needs to get lasik. My eyes are pretty bad, -3.75 but with sparring I’m close enough to see, that’s actually what got me into bjj and combat sports, you’re generally close up to your opponent. Eye sight is so incredibly important in other sports. He should have got lasik the moment he signed with the ufc, you can literally get it for like 2k now, it’s very affordable now. I still fuck with contact lenses because I don’t have 2k in disposable income because I’m a broke fuck, but the moment I get a little money together im getting it. Tired of waking up to a blurry world every morning.

Hmm. Must be an evolutionary thing, right before combat the senses are sharpened. I wonder how many years of brutish crushing, tearing, ripping, eviscerating, disemboweling, etc. had to take place throughout our evolutionary dynasty to acquire such a trait.
I think it’s also to do with that he does not need to see “crystal clear” in the fight.

he can see the opponent maybe a bit blurry but overall he can see.

I wonder if he can’t see far, meaning his short range vision is good.
