Why is there a sudden rush to ban them? Optics (and not the good kind that would sit on top of an AR 15), mostly. The US has caused a scare around this 'uber weapon'. Mis-direction, certainly. There is no good reason to further restrict legal gun ownership in Canada as it is most definitely not a problem. I strongly suspect that people in favour of gun restrictions have zero idea what the current gun laws look like.

Agree with most of the above, except the part where legal gun ownership isn’t a (small) part of the problem. We do know that some of the handguns used in gang shootings do come from legal Canadian owners. But that IMO doesn’t mean we should ban handguns, it means we need to crack down on the few bad apples that engage in this behaviour, which is exactly what the conservative platform promises to do.

Besides, this issue comes down to supply and demand. Sure go ahead and outlaw handguns, but don’t forget that our southern neighbour has more guns than people and guns are easy and relatively cheap to buy there. Whoever is responsible for smuggling guns to Canada will simply increase their quantities to make up for the lack of Canadian supply.

This is actually a much better reason for carding in high-crime areas, to be honest.

This may come as a shock, but Canada isn't the US, and I strongly suspect you have no idea about current Canadian gun regs. Just fyi, AR 15s and handguns are already banned except for shooting at government approved ranges. Someone owning 200 acres in rural Manitoba an hour drive from the nearest town can't even take their AR out target shooting in their back 40 - gun range all the way. Anything else is strictly prohibited.

To be clear, nobody is talking about banning them from gangs, they're talking about banning them from legal, law-abiding, licensed owners.

Yup, and the rules are crazy strict and it can be very easy to have your guns seized if you don't mind your P's and Q's.
