BETA Academy owner explains ending relationship with Lloyd Irvin

Did Jared weinar leave lloyd Irvin?

Yes BJJ United is no longer with TLI. Jared and Wilson both left. Justin "Chim" Garcia has also left, of course Nak has left. I've heard rumors that Dominic Cruz has left as well. Don't be surprised if more people jump off. Some medal chasers may be stuck there as lloyd controls most of their lives. Some of them get all of their living expenses, room/board etc all paid by lloyd. It could be rumor but I didn't think you could hold an outside job if you were a Medal Chaser. So it might be harder for some to leave than others. The times, they are a changing.

Ryan mentioned that he was forced to sign some contract and could not leave. Of course such contract do not work but still having li threatening to sue you over it is not great either.

Yeah that scares most people. As they don't know they aren't enforceable

Leaving as a medal chaser would be very hard. They are isolated and completely dependent on Lloyd for most things. It seems like most of their payment is in kind with food/shelter/training so they probably have minimal cash savings if any at all. I think it was mentioned in some previous videos that most do not have cars.

Leaving that kind of situation is not going to be easy.

In addition to Ryan Hall I know of at least 2 other "medal chasers" who've left.

I'm too lazy to scroll this far back on his FB page, but maybe a year ago he put up a post on his wall asking people what color his next car should be-- black or white. I think it might have been a Mercedes? It was definitely an ostentatious look-at-my-tacky-nouveau-riche-ass post.

Who does that?

I remember when I saw that on his FB wall. It made me throw up in my mouth a little. DEFINITELY not the reason I got into martial arts.

Camp Springs is in PG County, MD, where there is a large demographic that aspires to be and live like LI. He's exploiting that.

I just happened to watch Scarface last night.

Fantastic movie, but Tony Montana is the last guy I would ever idolize or want to be like. Sure he takes what he wants and takes orders from no one, but he also has a broken ass marriage, horrible coke addiction, and we all know how the movie ends. Tony Montana is the definition of a burn out meng.

FYI, Chim was never part of Team Lloyd Irvin. He was a platinum-, titanium-, whatever precious metal level member of the Lloyd Irvin business program and he left it nine-or-so months ago. He's had his own team, Jungle Gym, for years.

Also, it is HIGHLY unlikely that any of the medal chasers are stuck on the team. They all have family support systems outside of TLI so it's not like they're homeless if they leave. They get their needs met while they are there, hence the point of being sponsored athletes, but leaving isn't the end of any of their livelihoods.

Yeah but psychologically it has got to be tough going from being a medal chaser (where you are treated special at the gym, fly around the world competing, get fans on here, etc.) to just moving back home with your mom in your 20s with no job prospects whatsoever.

you forgot about his weird borderline incest obsession with his Gina Davis look alike sister.. and ends up killing his best friend/right hand man...

special effects were cheesy even for its time....

If there is a movie people want to obsessed over when it comes to be mafia/self made, I think Godfather is way more respectable of a movie..

I've been curious about this for a long time. All of the medal chasers are young and have either dropped out of college or never attended, right? Are there any examples of someone who has, for lack of a better word, graduated from the fighter house and gone on to something else? Obviously Ryan Hall quit and started his own school, but not everyone's who's good at *doing* bjj can *teach* bjj. And I doubt many of them have the money to open a school. So not all of them can become school owners or instructors. And as far as I can tell, there's not a lot of money in being just a bjj competitor. What happens to these guys when Lloyd's no longer paying their bills?

Yes I should have been more clear in drawing a line between affiliate and elemental metal member of the business side of things. I know Chim was never part of TLI but was a marketing team member. I just find it interesting that he left the marketing side of things.

While the medal chasers may not be 100% "stuck" You have to admit they're in a tight spot. Who really knows if they each have the family support to leave the team. I'm not sure that other teams are quick to pick up former TLI members either. Especially not on a full scholarship. Pans and Mundials are right around the corner. So going from a fully funded training camp to on your own can be daunting for those young men and women. I would bet there is also intense peer pressure to not leave. Once a few key people do that will change.

I mean, if you absolutely have to celebrate organized crime fiction, Godfather would be up there.

The memorabilia he has on the wall, I am pretty certain I have seen stuff exactly like that in bins at the flea market. I always just thought it was kitsch.

It's something you see on the wall of a teen with no real taste for art, like band posters.

Maybe they been told that LI will open them academiesfor them and turns them into millionaires?

I just never understood the celebration for Scarface by rap stars.. I get he is self made but he was a horrible businessman and even a crappier friend.

I've seen first-hand some great things about Lloyd and his team. I especially like the social awareness he has for the lower-class community near his academy where a good number of the kids come from. But then I hear things about his business practices with people who have some financial bearing and then I see his self-indulgence and I can't agree with it.

As positive as training BJJ may be, those kids don't need a role model who tells them it's OK to 'hustle' and make money/get ahead at all costs, who idolizes Scarface and has a dubious view of women. I'm sure they can find role models like that on many a local street corner.

Because it's the gangster 'the world is yours' attitude. It's just ironic because that movie is basically saying that this attitude will end up with you on the business end of a gun.

Live fast, die young. It may be that the folks who idolize that mindset are already in a position that they expect to die young anyways. Why not make a mark before you go?

1) The Godfather isn't about a self-made man. It's about a son getting reluctantly dragged into the mob to protect his family, and in the process his actions destroy the family. That's the thematic lynchpin to Michael's story throughout all 3 films.

While the sections on Vito in Godfather 2 show the humble beginnings of a self-made man, they don't really follow him to a pinnacle of power. In contrast, Scarface runs the gamut from the humble beginnings to success beyond imagination. Scarface is also a lot more quotable than Vito's section of Godfather 2, which is almost entirely in Italian. Plus, Tony Montana as a character is a lot more defiant and outspoken than the gentlemanly Corleones.

2) Also, the African American community (on the whole) isn't wild about the Godfather films, due to racism in the films. This is at its most egregious during a scene in which the Five Families decide to limit the drug trade to the minority community, justifying it by saying "they're animals anyway, so let them lose their souls".
