Of course Tom wouldn't lose the belt, he is not scheduled to fight. But Jon is. The same situation that they all have several months to prepare. Jon knows he WILL be fighting against either Stipe or Tom. Tom knows he MiGHT be fighting and it will either be Stipe or Jon. Everyone has several months to prepare for each scenario. If Stipe pulls out and Jon refuses to fight Tom, that is essentially a forfeit, and Jon will be stripped of the title and awarded to Tom.
 
Imagine Jones has to pull out of the fight and Tom has to fight Stipe. Not something anyone would want.
