How was he sitting out. He beat 5/6 of the top 10 waiting for Jon, and was gunning for the Gane fight that he even went to Paris, but Gane refused. Jon beat Gane and then waited for an old and way past his best Stipe. If Aspinall had beaten that version of Stipe, I can imagine the criticism Aspinall would have got. So Jon didn't even have a single top 10 defence, while Aspinall won and defended the Interim against top 10 guys. I'd argue that Tom beat two of the toughest opponents at HW at the time in Pavlovich and Blaydes. Jon could have fought either of them if he didn't want to fight Tom, but he chose the easier option in Stipe.

Hey, I think a ton of the Aspinall hype is people who are invested in hating Jones. And I get it. At least the person I thought was the supreme MMA asshole got thumped and humiliated by Diaz, Khabib and then Poirier, twice. I got that eventual satisfaction. Jones danced off into the sunset, leaving his anti-fans with a decades-long case of MMA hater-blueballs.

Having said that, criticizing Aspinall for this is just stupid. Not all eyepokes are the same, he got it in BOTH eyes (so how do you soldier on like that?), and they were really bad. I'll skip the part where there's a calculus and trying to continue in that condition against a precision striker like Gane would be doubly stupid.

Most of the threads on this are by either Jones supporters, or people who were sick of his haters and their obsession, getting payback by trolling the Aspinall supporters, be they legit or the fair-weather "want to say Jones ducked this guy so we must build him up to be a god of death to be feared" variety.
