Thanks bro. That time on weeknights is going to be almost impossible for me because of distance and work. Maybe I could make it on a Saturday sometime? I'm busy for the next few Saturdays, but I'm sure I will get a free one eventually.
I appreciate you taking the time to clear things up. I also want to apologize for some of the assumptions I made that weren't right (that you didn't train BJJ before you got your black belt, etc.) Since it was a unique situation I should have just waited for you to chime in. Not everything always fits into a neat little box.
I hope you can understand where I was coming from. I also hope you can understand that I realize I was wrong to jump to conclusions too quickly. You're giving off a good vibe here, and I wish the best to you and your students.

Meh, if he is black belt level and a nice guy I don't care about anything else. At least he is not lying about his rank. The cheesy website does annoy me though.

1. I sincerely hope Chulo isn't this insufferable in real life. Christ, what an imbecile.
2. I still don't understand the mechanics of Mr. Rinehold's promotion to 2nd degree black belt. The way it's being laid out doesn't sit right. That says nothing about his skill as a competitor or a teacher, because I'm sure he's very good at both, the results speak for themselves. It's still very odd.

Do you understand how you get an IBJJF certificate of 2 nd degree BB?
You have to get your Black belt certificate first, USD 400.
Then every years of membership, send your annual fee of USD35.
After 3 years, he can ask for his 1st degree certificate, USD 150.
then after after another 3 years, he can ask for his 2 nd degrees, USD 150.
So it is normal that people don't understand the mechanism on how he got the certificate of 2 nd degree without having the certificate for BB and 1st degree prior.
There is a few BB posting in F12 that would not spend the money to get the certificate. They just paid for their membership card.

Here's a place to start, according to the ibjjf, a two stripe black belt has to have been a black belt in bjj for 6 years. By his own admission, the BJJ Ronin had not earned that distinction. That raises the question, why has he been certified as a two stripe black belt in BJJ?
On the surface, it doesn't make sense and hasn't been adequately addressed IMO. Again, this does not take anything away from his skills, competition achievements, or teaching skills. It's just very curious.

I too was confused about this. My understanding of stripes for black belts has always been that they are based on seniority, not skill. After all, Marcelo Garcia was tearing up ADCC and the Mundials when he had no stripes (I believe). And there are lots of other examples of new black belts who became world champions and had no stripes. So... I don't understand how you can skip to 2nd Degree Black Belt based on skill.
I was hoping to get an answer to my question about why he hadn't trained at a BJJ academy before I inquired about this issue, which seemed a little more confrontational. But you're right, it's an important thing to ask.

I'm glad I stumbled onto this thread. I don't frequent the forums as much anymore. I can say from personal experience that Luke has some serious ground skills. I trained with him about 4 years ago now and the guy was a beast. I was in West Virginia for some work-related training and was invited to train there by a friend. He had some high-level guys training under him. He had a very tough wrestler named Jacob, that guy was nails. He was preparing for a fight at the time. We had some good battles. Jacob fought in Bellator and won his fight last I saw. Don't know what happened with him after that though.
Personally, Luke was very welcoming and all-around nice guy. He came off as genuine and he and his students were all classy. He let me to train for free during my stay in the area (about 4 weeks) and asked if I'd be willing to teach some time, which I gladly did!!!
As for his lineage, I didn't care and didn't look into it. I was invited by a friend to train, quickly found out he was nails, was welcomed, and had a great experience so that's all I cared about. I trained maybe 5 or 6 times while in the area; that's all my work schedule would allow unfortunately. I would have no problem recommending his place if you're in the area.

Balto and ElKarlo don't want anybody in BJJ to make more money than them sadly.
Personally I find this situation to be much more interesting than that other thread. There are dozens of jokers like in the other thread. This is about a guy who actually went directly to 2nd degree black belt in the IBJJF. As far as I know, that is a completely unique situation.
Plus this thread is about a much larger BJJ area so it will attract more attention. "Rural fraud of the week" threads are pretty typical. I care a lot more about a guy in my area with legit skills and a unique story than some random joker from the sticks in North Carolina.
