Any old school EverQuest players here?

Did anyone else just play EQ and chill in it a lot without always accomplishing things? I got to max level on two characters but I never did a ton of raids. I honestly got more satisfaction out of helping other players more. I remember going to starting areas with my 65 druid and just buffing lower level characters and it brought a smile on my face to see them get happy about leveling up so much faster without having to spend time resting.

Since games have gotten easier I feel like the communities are worse as a result. No longer do players need to team up. Most players today log in and do dailies then log out. EQ was the only online game I've played where I didn't encounter a ton of trolls. Well there's trolls.... but you know what i mean lol
Meant to respond to this.

I would absolutely just log in and hang out back then. Just chill in the Plane of Knowledge, chat with guildies, help with random stuff.

I don't know that stuff like WoW attracts more trolls, it just had so many more players, that trolls were bound to show up. It is just different demographics in the same genre.

I do miss some of the chillness of the game though. Setting up a camp to try and get a certain mob to spawn and then hope it drops your item. I could sit there and do homework between pulls and still feel like I progressed a bit.

I think there was way less and my theory is because the difficulty of EQ was pretty crazy. Most classes struggled to even take on more than a single enemy at a time so you were forced to cooperate with others. I don’t know if it’s changed but when I played you had to find coordinates on a map to locate things. Loot was limited too so you had to be nice to others if you wanted to do end game raids, if you ninja loot you’d be ostracized. The games community reflected that of real life better, there were more consequences for being an asshole. Modern day MMORPGs are more casual so players now know they’ll get some loot and dailies will help them stay powerful enough, less need to work with others. That’s the thing that’s missing from these games today. And maybe this is just me but I remember being on the younger side of the player base when I was in highschool. A lot of my guild mates had kids already.

UP is very lucrative but the xp is poop compared to DN, even pulling like half the zone at a time, lol

Has anyone tried either Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen or Monsters & Memories? Both are EQ inspired MMO games. People seem to like Monsters and Memories much more. Can't really find many comparison videos but there's one here.

A lot has changed even with live, but this server is a whole different animal entirely from live. Live has mercenaries which are (essentially) a second player but an NPC that you can choose from depending on what you need (if you are a tank you can take a healer merc, or a healer can take a tank merc, or dps.), this server you are pretty much a one man army and its weird seeing people group as I can literally pull massive trains of red mobs and aoe them down solo pretty easy, even at level 56.

The old school social aspect was awesome where your reputation (good or bad) was known server wide if you were high level. I played on a pvp server and the griefers and scumbags were known by everyone, as were the good and honorable players... although I definitely dont miss spending 6 hours farming lguk for an fbss for my friend though, lol. (Or before maps running around spamming /loc to figure out where you are and where you are going)

As for me, I am still rocking my 6box team on the official EverQuest Test server. Camping the final named in the latest expansion to complete The Outer Brood Hunter achievement right now. We had +76% named spawn chance last week but thats over and this last dude doesn't want to spawn!

I will be sad if this goes away, I will never play live servers again, this is significantly more fun imo.

Im flying back to the Phillipines tomorrow morning and I got it installed on my Asus ROG ally X and bought a portable monitor, If I can pull it off Ill play on the connecting flight from LAX to Tokyo since I have a premium seat with good room

Test server was my home for my entire EQ career. 3 boxing was the most I could handle. Nice to see someone still active.

Same, will be crushed if it gets shut down, but trying not to keep my hopes up. It's been a fantastic trip down memory lane and going to enjoy every minute while I can. I think final judgement is due on the 16th, so just over a month. Started an alt, but don't think I'll take him past level 20 and just focus on my main until they come through all of this.

Played on Test back in the day as well from like 99 to like 03. Joined up with Zen Cabal when they were first starting out, and never raided due to work schedule but read that they were one of the more active raiding guild on test for a time, which was nice to see.

On THJ made my way down to the Sleeper. Still at 56 grinding out AA's, but wanted to test the waters. Smashed all of the mobs on the way to the Sleeper, but wasn't going to win that fight. Without any real prep, got him down to about 70% and could out heal his damage output, but I was burning through mana at a much faster rate than his health dropping, so gated away and decided to come back after I start leveling again. Going to focus on PoP flags for a time.

Dude, I was in Zen Cabal too! Still am I think, if it is still there.

Sleeper sucks for casters. He is resistant as crazy. Even at 65 I mostly just have to melee him down

Whhaaa?! Who were the guild leaders? Curious if any of the officers or guild leader were still around years later. I think the guild leader was a monk named Kaage, but that could have been the leader of my guild on Vanguard. I do remember first officer was a cleric named Mysteria. There was almost never a time I would log in and they weren't on. Couldn't believe how many hours they logged in and how dedicated they were.

Mysteria was the guild leader when I joined. I played a Paladin named Cranapple. I was an officer for a long time. They were a great bunch.

I destroyed him at 56 with mostly dots/dd, however being a sham/Dru/Necro gives me all the best unresistable resist debuffs (save for tash but I carry a tash orb to melee swap, lol) and a lot of dots with big negative resistance modifiers as well)

Ya i want to make a second char but will probably just hold off as well. I was thinking bard/mage and either cleric or pally. slay undead will be fun as hell but the PoT cleric hammer is very good too.

Before I hit 65 pretty much all that would land was my SK fire dot. Even the SHM epic was useless, even after Malo. Now I can get my whole spell bar to stick

You are a dotting monster Necro and druid are shredders, then top it with shammy debuffs. Damn

Plus all 3 have pets. The hilarious part is that with the PoT pet focus, my necro pet cons light blue despite being the only dedicated pet class of the three and the highest level pet spell to boot... but the shaman pet is yellow, and the druid pet is red (casting lower levels of necro pets make 0 difference, its really bizarre)

Did you give them all hammers of holy vengeance? Even my wussy SK pet actually makes a little difference with it

I have all the pet aa's capped so they are chainsaws. Two have HoHV/ Ethereal Destroyers (heal/dd)
One has a Coral Hilted Tulwar (aoe)

When I have the funds I'll probably give all 3 CHT's for aoe farming (enchanted ones can be had for 15k sometimes but lately all ive been seeing lately are 22-25k) and swap to HoHV/ED for bosses.
