I mean, idk why that fight was a draw, honestly... I've re-watched it (I hadn't watched it besides the highlights a long time ago tbh) and the only rounds I give Jan are 2 and 3... The first one I definitely see Ank being more active, landing more significant strikes overall... Round 2 and 3 were Jan's imo but round 3 was somewhat close, but the leg kicks gave him the clear edge. Round 4 and 5 Ankalaev absolutely dominated. And then I looked at the stats and they back it up too...

Ankalaev noticeably outstriked Jan in the first round and dominated the round 4 and 5... Round 5 was a 10-8 absolutely imo...

Round 1 : 10-9 Ank
Round 2 : 10-9 Jan
Round 3 : 10-9 Jan
Round 4 : 10-9 Ank
Round 5 : 10-8 Ank

Ankalaev : 48 - 46 ....

This one seemed clearer to me than Ankalaev vs Alex Poatan, for sure.

Thoughts?

Thoughts? Ank needed a 10-8 round 5 just for the fight to be a draw. Those are my thoughts.

I posted something similar (but a little bit less in detail) in one of the early threads about the potential Alex vs Ank fight around the time Alex became champ in response to many "arguments" (some of which were that he for sure lost to Jan) why he does not deserve a sniff of a title shot and must win like several fights in a row convincingly. No one reacted to it. Alex's aura was strong then

if anyone won the fight it was ankalaev but draw is a fair choice since round 1 is very close

I thought Ankalaev clearly won.

23/25 media members scored it a UD for Ankalaev.

I had family in town for the holidays, and they don’t follow the UFC, but they thought Ankalaev got robbed as well.

I think it was pretty clear Ank had won. Even when the judges were announcing, Jan was pointing to Ankalaev when the last judge score would be given, like "it's Ankalaev!!" ... You can clearly see Jan confused and pointing to Ank like "give it to him" before the judge announced a draw.

Joe Rogan was a dick... He has no place to say to a fighter "I think you lost!!" .... Like, wtf, you aren't the judge... But when the judges were announcing, you can clearly see Jan confused when the last judge would decide the winner, with his hands pointing out to Ankalaev, like, "he won!!" ...

Ank won, Jan admitted he lost, his manager probrably advised him to retract what he said earlier to avoid losing sponsorships, endorsement deals etc.

According to fightstats its 4-1 to Ank but round 3 probrably to Jan because of the damaged done by leg kicks.

Ank was the uncrowned champ since 2022.

I think a draw was fine. Jan did almost all the damage and ank winning that fight that way was not championship at all. It was a ank snoozer and only jans leg kicks were exciting

What? You haven't watched the fight then. The first round Ankalaev had the most significant strikes plus was pressuring Jan more. The second round was clearly Jan's. The third was close, the # significant strikes were even, but Jan had the most impact with the leg kicks, but again, close. The fourth round Ankalaev went in full on takedown and managed to take Jan down, landed several shots to the point that in the last 30 seconds of the round, they were even saying "I don't think the judge will stop yet because it's a championship fight, but that's nasty g&p" ... And in the fifth, he again got the take down and landed more than 14 hard short to Jan's face, almost had him in a submission, and Jan looked totally rocked and barely hanging up...

Like, how were 4th and 5th an Ank snoozer when he pieced Jan in the g&p over and over?? And in the first round, he had 5 higher # sig strikes, plus was the one on the pressure most times? Round 3 was a close round too, with Ankalaev pressuring more, tho the # sig strikes were equal (actually, Ank had one more than Jan), but the leg kicks still did, arguably, more damage... But still, Ankalaev lost only one round clearly, which was round 2. Round 1 it was somewhat close but he had the edge on the stats and on pressure and round 3 was close, too... But rounds 4 and 5 were definitely Ankalaev to the point the last round was the most dominant round from each fighter by far... And it almost had the fight stopped before the bell rung...

Fair enough. I'm not telling I am right btw, I don't intend to come across like that. I think I speak kinda "ofc this is true", but my bad, it's also just a POV, I'm just a MMA fan with little to no training in combat sports, so I'm a pretty much a casual haha

Nah it's all good you probably are. Looking at the stats and the general consensus probably a close ank win. I remember the leg kicks which I will admit I weigh pretty heavy Rogan style becaue I like them.

The UFC didn't want this at the time even though now they are half way there...
