Media Alex Volkanovski Says Felt "Devastated" After Loss - Wants "Extended Break Eying ONLY Title Fight At End of Year"

KO'd in 2 of his last 2 actually. I thought he did a decent job of marking up Topuria for a round and a half, but he did look timid and not very loose after getting KO'd so recently, and was backing up with his head up trying to still watch for punches.
That math checks out.

Volk was within Ilia'sreach with his guard low and his chin exposed in almost every exchange they had. It was like he was either dismissive of Ilias power or he was just plain not fast enough to get out quicker than Ilia could close distance.

If they fight again, Ilia just gets him earlier.

Championship fights are 5 rounds.

Volk survived less than 2.

Why would you think it goes better with Volk even older next time and still acting like it was a puncher's chance?

He didn't see the glaring holes in his game the first fight and he isn't getting faster or more technical by any substantial amount in his mid-late 30s.

People are letting sentimental feelings cloud their judgement. Volk will never beat Topuria.

So anyone who suffers a knockout loss in a fight doesn't have a chance in a rematch? Even if they were winning? Is that the argument you are making? You're an 11 year old account, you're not that naive.

Anyone who can't defend their chin from being wide open for a superior boxer is quite likely to lose.

If that lead to them losing fairly quickly in their first fight, yes, it will likely lead to them losing the rematch.

Not sure what is hard to understand here.

Nice takes. All of a sudden, Volk who has outstruck every other striker, can impossibly survive for 5 rounds against Topuria. Typical Sherdog - Volk was never any good, Topuria is the second coming. You guys are basically hyping “puncher’s chance” to unbelievable levels - Topuria is great but has he knocked out every single opponent? Is he LW’a prime Anderson Matrix Silva? No, he’s not. I don’t know if Volk can/will beat Topuria, but don’t make it sound like it’s an easy/cannot lose fight for Topuria.

Great to hear though that Volk is considering an extended break, end of the year or early next year makes sense to rematch.

I agree sherdog does this often but with volkanovski, the age factor is huge. He was frankly already too old to be as elite as he was the last few years.

It was physics defying. So it seems like time has just caught up. However good he was even just a few fights ago he's now a 37 year old featherweight - which is ancient - coming off a brutal ko with another ko the fight before. It is absolutely not looking good on paper.

There might be some bandwagon jumping here but there's also an aspect of time finally catching up

it's too bad. now we just wait for the history to revise itself. pretty soon volk was overrated and islam the real goat of the multiverse.

volk needs a lot of time off, and an honest assessment from those close to him. i can see one more high level fight, but if there's even a hint of hesitation/slow-down it is over at the highest competition.

that hook or overhand Top threw at the end likely cracked Volks jaw for good

Love Volk but his expectations are a little out of reality..

He got KO'd twice in a row and thinks he's going to get a title shot when he wants it and on his terms?

I'd honestly like to see him get another chance, but effhead Dana and co are ready to move on with the Spanish Notorious.

Can’t help but see parallels between Volk & Usman. Same age, seemed like the goat one day & 1-3 the next, both went up on short notice to fight a beast & lost & right now both need a win more than anything. IMO they should fight a 5-10 ranked fighter & then wait for a TS if they win or if they lose accept reality & call it a career before taking any more damage to their health & legacy.

Rematch? Again?

One of the rare moments I wish the left shoryuken landed.

Lighter weightclass fighters don't get better at 35. I can't see it ending much differently than last time

Good for him that he felt he should fight end of this year instead of jumping back into a rematch ASAP. He ?does? Deserves the title shot...? As he cleared out FW div and beat the 2nd best fighter in Max thrice....

Either way Ilia via strikes again if they fought again

His age doesn't have much to do with it. He looked great against Yair, fast and crisp half a year ago.

He made a career altering decision, one of the worst decisions any great fighter has ever made, and he has paid with his health, legacy and future with it.

He fought one of the best fighters in the world on a 10 days notice, in no shape or form, ready to fight him, because he let his arrogance get the better of him.

That loss which was unavoidable in the shape (or lack of it) he was in, diminished his confidence, diminished his aura of invincibility at FW, gave him a concussion and he decided the best way forward was a fight 3 months later against a fighter with tremendous power, another arrogant and illogical decision.

You can take a 30-year Volk, one that drinks regularly, overeats and then decides to fight Islam on a 10 days notice, get KO'ed and right after fight Topuria with no chance to rest and heal, and the outcome would be the same. It's not age, it's his complete lack of humility and self-awareness that caused these two knockouts.
