After all this, Aspinal needs a new nick name

A man has to know his limitations, so at least we can say that Jon does. Otherwise he wouldn't have ducked.

Sure, but he also has wins over JDS, Spivak, Derrick Lewis, and he arguably beat Ngannou.

Agree that Tai isn’t his biggest win but pump the brakes. He didn't "arguably beat Ngannou".
Judges

48-47x2
49-46

22 media scores

16 had it 48-47 Ngannou
6 had it 49-46 Ngannou

25 of 25 between media and actual judges scored it for Ngannou. 7 had it 4 rounds to 1.

There's no argument at all for Francis not winning that fight. None.

Nobody in their right mind would argue that Gane beat Ngannou. But yes, Tai clearly isn't Gane's best win.

It was 2 rounds apiece going into the fifth and Gane was winning the fifth round until he lost position. It was a very close fight.

49-46 Ngannou is dumb.

One media outlet scored it for Gane, and so did 38% of fans.

49-46 Ngannou wasn't the correct score imo but it's better than Gane 48-47.

Saying the fight was competitive or close is far different than saying Gane "arguably won". He didn't. There's no reasonable argument for saying he won.

The fifth round was a lot more competitive than you are making it out to be.

Again, 25 of 25 scored it for Ngannou. That's not a "strong lean" or "hey most had it for Francis". Literally not ONE judge or media outlet scored it for Gane. That's not some cosmic coincidence in a razor close fight. That's everyone universally accepting who won.

The fight kinda sucked TBH. Ngannou mostly made it that way. Boring. But he absolutely won.

He made it boring because Gane was beating him up on the feet.

One scored it for Gane. (Scott Fontana)

And I certainly wouldn't bet on Ngannou in a rematch. He was badly outmatched on the feet.

I will admit that Gane shit the bed against Jones and probably should have lost the decision against Volkov, but he's a damn good fighter.

Shit. You're right. I didn't scroll down far enough. 25 of 26 (between judges and media). Almost universal but I still gotta admit I missed that and was wrong.

I wouldn't bet either guy in a rematch. Ngannou is older and while he easily smashed Ferreira...I still don't know exactly what he is vs an actual top tier guy now. And there aren't many of those around, but Gane is one (relative to where HW is). Gane wouldn't give me confidence either though given his past few performances and inability to defend grappling. That's a crapshoot fight right now.

Aspinall would probably be the betting favourite though, I don't think Jones has ever not been the favourite except for probably the Shogun fight.

Jones was around -200 as the challenger to Shogun.

Jones opened as a dog to Gane, but the line flipped to Jones being favored.

Aspinall is currently favored over Jones.

I think Gane is one of the most physically gifted fighters ever, but I don't think he has a champion mentality, or a particularly good team behind him.

I agree. Guys his size rarely move like he's capable of moving. He got kind of a late start, but imo with his athletic ability he could've become a very capable grappler (even vs top opponents). It seems to be sort of a known thing that he's not a gym rat that's obsessed with improving and yeah that's likely what you mean by "champion mentality". He seemed defeated too vs Jones before he ever got in the cage and looked for the first easy way out.

And don't forget Bonner and Gusmao!

I’d go with the martyr his whole career is derailed
