A wolf versus a dog (discuss please)

Its a million years of natures best vs 200 years of human stupidity fucking that up.

You think we bred dogs to make them weaker?

Well some, yes...

But we also made some for hunting... That's eugenics, quite the opposite of "fucking that up".

640 acres is a sq mile. Some land can support a head of cattle per acre but others require 100 acres a head. The best land tends to go for crops. Ranches out west can be huge for a reason. Decent ranches used to be 10,000 acres or larger in the past. I know of some 7,000 acre ranches that strain to support 350 head.

Yeah whats big here in the east is much different than out west. A couple hundred acres around here is a decent spread , and I'd say contiguous 1200 acre blocks are pretty few and far between . My folks have 20 acres , only 12 of which is pasture and they easily had 5 horses on it at one time , its amazing the difference that regular rain and decent topsoil make I guess.

Did you see the link I added to the post?

Looks like your folks are doing 4 acres per horse. Are they buying any feed for the horses?

Nice! you'd be almost a country unto yourself Only 21 mil too!

They had 5 but are down to 2 now . They're trying to streamline I guess

@ 5 on the 12 ac of cleared land it was closer to 2 acres per horse. The remaining 8 are woods. They buy hay in the winter , but in the summer its all grass.

People bred dogs to protect flocks of sheep from wolves by themselves such as the Great Pyrenees.

My dog is a Sheppard/Pyranees mix. Pretty cool dog, glad he is not as big as a real Pyranees though- 130+lbs sometimes!

The Great Pyranees is getting mentioned a lot. The USDA has considered them a failure now. They are being slaughtered by the wolves.

Some would kill for 2 acre productivity. On the other hand about 2/3's of the people I know grow their own hay.

Compared to the places I've been out west ( California, Wyoming, Colorado and Nevada) its a jungle where I'm at.Those wide open spaces are pretty damn sweet though! I'm in central Va about halfway between the coast and the blue ridge mts. Where are you at man?

I bounce around a bit. I am in Oklahoma at the moment but I consider the whole West to be home. In the old days combiners would start in West Texas and end up in Montana doing harvest. :)

Sounds like Lonesome Dove. Great flic/mini series btw.

There are few confused things in this post

Feral(?)- the fact wolf is feral mean probably the opposite, since they got survival instict (even just as avoid useless damage) instead act kamikaze retard as dogs.
A wolf is likely less aggressive in direct face off, specially if alone.
But yeah, if forced or willing to fight wolf's wildness play a role, they're used to fight each other and as hunters they are used to kill

I see it as the difference between 2 guys in a street fight (dog's p.o.v.) and two army soldiers in a life or death fight (wolf's pov)

LOL, I have been by the Lonesome Dove Ranch. There is a Bronze statue of one of the characters in Lonesome Dove about 10 miles from me. Bill Pickett, legendary cowboy.
