A wolf versus a dog (discuss please)

They started running towards her wolf aggressively and she got scared. She said the wolf picked each of them up by the neck and laid them down and restrained them both.
Dogs of peace

Well, Wolves have been operating under unmolested Darwinian Law (Only the strong survive) since their inception. For that reason, your 'average' wolf will destroy your 'average' dog. They are a lot stronger and smarter too. There are places where wolves just jedi mind trick stray dogs into coming back to their pack to be eaten.

That said, while wolves are smarter than dogs, they are not smarter than Man. And man has been selectively breeding dogs for a while now as well. Dogs have been bred to fight wolves. Irish Wolfhounds were bred specifically to protect against and hunt down wolves. Caucasian Ovcharkas and Mastiffs can be enormous. Males can get over 200 lbs. They were bred to fight wolves, jackals and bears.

Does that mean your 'average' Irish Wolfhound or Ovchorka today could kill your 'average' wolf. No. Breeding to make them more docile and better companions has softened them up considerably.

But if you went out to the right places that still use dogs to protect flocks, you could absolutely find a bloodline of Wolfhound or Ovchorka that could handle a wolf.

But if I were going to go out and find a pure blood dog to fight a wolf, I would look for a Kangal. They are a little smaller than Ovcharka but they are just as strong and a lot faster. They are faster even than wolves. The right purebred Kangal is a badass of a dog and would have no trouble killing a wolf. In fact a single Kangal can fend of an attack from 2 or 3 wolves, maybe more. One of the other benefits of Kangals is that they work together incredibly well. A group of 3 ot 4 purebred Kangals can do serious damage to an entire pack of wolves.

I don't want to embed anything cause consequences. But you can go on youtube and see Kangals killing wolves, and a single Kangal fight off multiple wolves.

How much does one of these monsters cost, per Wikipedia they appear to be really good dogs.

Well, in the US a good pure breed Kangal would run you between $500-$5000. But I am not sure the US lineages are the best. I'd say if you really want a wolf killer, buy a lineage honed over centuries from Asia. That's what the government does when they want to fuck up wolves.

They are getting ready to let some of these Kangals loose over here, cause the wolves have been fucking up the American breeds of various dogs.

Haha I was more just curious than anything but thanks for the info!!!

I've seen stuffed larger timber wolves and them things are enormous. The paws on the thing were bigger than Donald Trumps hands.

I kind of want to get my dog stuffed when it dies, is this inappropriate?

Too be fair he’s a huge asshole that farts all the time so if I get him stuffed I can fart in his face for the rest of my life.

Betting the Wolf would eat the dog

might be expensive

Idk if anything I think the natural instinct to kill might trump what can be trained. I'm not 100% sure but I have that feeling.
I don’t think so. I think the natural instinct to survive trumps everything in a wolf. Game bred dogs can fight to the death because that survival instinct has been bred out of them. Most wild animals don’t fight to the death. They fight for dominance, sure. And death can be a result. But more likely the losing animal disengages and literally lives to fight another day. That’s how wolverines back down bears. Obviously a bear could wreck a wolverine, but most of the time it’s just not worth it.

You do make good points. I have seen dogs latch on and not let go. Which is scary as hell.

Dogs have been manipulated so much by humans they are basically “biological” weapons if we want them to be.

I watched a show about the history of domesticating dogs and the differences between wolves and dogs. The biggest mental difference is that a wolf can and does solve it's own problems. There is nothing in them that makes them want to turn to a human for help. They're independent and capable.

My dog would look to me for help if a wolf were to attack her. And she's a big one.

People here are assuming all sorts of shit about wolf mentality.

There are dogs that have been bred to fight to the death for nothing.

It's 90% psychology and dogs got dat bro.

Prime motivated, sea level wolf probably has an edge however.
This is the key here.

Most predators are opportunistic. They are not looking for fair fight or any fight at all. the cost of any injury is usually death for them. They want to find prey that can only minimally fight back.

The types of dogs that can and will fight a wolf do so with no regard for their own safety. They are all in and protected and healed up by humans if injured.

The wolf is bigger, stronger badder, in most instances but the dog's motivation can often be the deciding factor. One is looking to retreat and get out of there and the other to kill.

This is a well known case of a dog killing a mountain lion, i consider the cougar to be more dangerous than one wolf. I'm sure in most cases the dog wouldn't come out as victor, but this time i'm glad he did.[shame the dog has it's ear's cut small.]

I am not declaring the story was made up but a bit of a miracle. It was an exception to the rule case and not the norm.

Most of the time a mountain lion or timber wolf will prevail in a fight against a dog. Even if it's an alpha dog.
