Zookeeper Gabe's Animal Thread V6.0

Hey Gabe, do zoo's vaccinate big cats, coyotes, etc for rabies?

@blood- love green snakes. Rarely see them up here

@Jefferz-yes

@sea-those are probably Doc Antles animals. Who is more about $$$ and showmanship then conservation.

I just watched 2 long tail weasels gang up on a mouse in my garage. The mouse was behind a deep freeze. One weasel went to the end and flushed him out. As soon as the mouse got into the open the other one ran it down.
That was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I hope they stick around, they're not that common around here.

On youtube, I came across this guy who trains minks to hunt. He buys a "game bred" mink, that little thing scares me witless.

@jefferz-that's an awesome story man. Would loved to have seen that.

@gaeric-pretty much all herons make similar sounds. Great blues make some crazy sounds.

I witnessed a Nat Geo moment the other day. I was banging out a hike in one of the local parks. It's a great time of year around here with the highbush blueberries and dogwood in bloom. I stopped for a sit down to take it in. And there out of the corner of my eye there's a dart of two small shapes and some buzzing. At first I took it for two large insects but the high pitched chirps gave it a way. Two hummingbirds, male and female.
The female landed on a lower branch of a mountain laurel. The male performed his display dance, flying in 20' U shaped arcs. The speed was incredible. After 5 swoops he landed on a branch of one of the trees. Then they disappeared like creatures of the Fae.

Love hummingbirds. My mom is obsessed with them and will sit next to a feeder and let them land in her hand.

I had a kill deer do the fake broken wing act on me at work today.

I feel like gold. My wife, I and an unknown neighbor just rescued a baby groundhog . I had seen the mother pacing back and forth looking distressed. She was by a sewer grate so I figured what happened. When I got over it confirmed my suspicions. The guy with the white dog was by so I called him over to help me pick up the grate. When we got it out of the way I reached in and picked him up. He was scared. I was scared, but sometimes you have to overcome fear to help someone out. I carried h back to the entrance of his home and put him down. Then ran figuring i'd have an angry mom on my ankles. My wife watched the little guy run inside. Family reunited.

Awesome man. Just remember they are one of the only rodents that carries rabies.

Cheers.

I hope your wife rewarded you appropriately.

that was awesome. that mink reminds me of Conor. I'm watching his other videos now and its fascinating how quickly he tames this crazy bastard.

Gabe, can Madrill Bamboons be housed in zoos. Have you ever worked with them, are they mean?

Plenty of zoos have Mandrills. Worked with them briefly at my last zoo. The male used to hate and threaten me every time I walked by

Cool. The zoo here doesn't have any. What kind of threat did he make, are they diffcult to work with

They would bob their head at you and when you did it back they got pissed. Could get an appeasement grin from them once in a while, unlike most primates showing them you teeth isn't a threat.

Good man. I'm sure he'll reward you by tearing your lawn up for many years to come.

I love Fox. I actually looked into getting a domesticated one, but apparently they stink and are assholes once they mature. Also really expensive.

Gabe is going to nab a tree kangaroo for me anyhow.

I heard some special Russian fox is being bred and domesticated and is a great pet. I think it was the siberian (artic) fox. Yeah they're expensive though.
