Worst Admitted Game Plans

Michael Johnson swinging and missing more times in a fight than I can ever remember. As if he did not realize he was fighting Diaz. And then the in-fight adjustments were non-existent. He was missing the same punches in round 3 as he was in round 1. Coach should be embarrassed.

He won round 1

I was just watching a top five Anderson KOs and it got me thinking about some of the worst game plans that fighters have admitted to have used during fights. The two most salient to me are these:

Anderson Silva vs. Rich Franklin 1.

Franklin went on record to say that part of his game plan was to get Anderson to get him into the thai plum clinch because he thought he'd be able to capitalize from there. He went on to getting kneed in the face immediately which lead to the end of the fight.

Dominick Cruz vs. TJ Dillishaw

After the fight TJ's coach Duane Ludwig came out and said that part of the game plan was to swing at air to set up other shots. This seems ridiculous looking back as Cruz's best shots and takedowns came off of TJ swinging at air and leaving himself prone to a suddenly charging Cruz.

What are some other crazy game plans that fighters have mentioned after their fights? Are there any times where they turned out to be successful?
BJs weird gazelle standup stance.

Nate falling on purpose in Mcgregor 2

Royler going full text-book, constantly looking for the mount against much, much heavier Sano... was crazy...

Cain vs JDS 1

Cain fought injured and still tried to bang with JDS without mixing TDs.

This was hindsight for most people. Not just Cain but about 60% of the forum thought his striking was good enough to stand and bang with JDS.

Martin Kampman is the GOAT of terrible game plans.

He is super well rounded with good striking and a very good ground game. So his strikes with Paul Daley and goes to the ground against Jake Shields.o_O

WOT
how about Thiago with an even worse game plan against him

What does that have to do with my point?

"He was missing the same punches in round 3 as he was in round 1"

No he was landing them in round one. If he had fought the same way he would've won the fight. Diaz got into his head and took him out of his gameplan.

You can win a round and still miss a ton of punches. Sounds like you didn't watch the fight and are just doing wikipedia research.

Why you feel need to say "beginning of a fight", like that makes somekind of difference? It was a flying knee and thats it, fighters do that all the time and it doesnt matter at which point in a fight you throw it. If anything, the beginning is the safest time, since the opponent havent got time yet to get comfortable your movement and range and the chance it doesnt get countered is higher than later in fight. And if getting yourself inside a range where your opponent is at her/his best is enough to call that move stupid, by that criteria I could point out million "stupid moves" from fighters in almost every fight ever happened.

People act like the flying knee ended the fight. It was the masterpiece 10 sec performance from Ronda right after that which resulted Cat losing, not the knee. Fighters put themselves in potentially and theoritically dangerous positions ALL THE TIME in fights, it was all Ronda and her skills which made all the difference against Cat.
You can't possibly be that stupid, can you..?

First thing first, you are completely dry at the start of the fight. Second, you have 100% of your physical energy. Third, you have 100% mental focus.

If you honestly think it's a good time to leap into clinch range against a judo black belt, when you have all of that stacked against you, you're an imbecile.

How about trying to use your footwork, range, and strikes to frustrate your opponent and keep them guessing on the outside, anticipating the inevitable clinch? You know she wants to clinch, so your game plan would be to give her what she wants 2 seconds into the fight..?

If you think that was the best time to go for a flying knee, you have no idea what it means to set up your attacks and you have no business judging what's a "stupid move" and what's a legitimate game plan.

Maybe because a well set up and timed flying knee is completely different than just rushing out with one at second 1

Cat Zingano:
"But she kept saying things like that so I said, 'OK, let's do this.' What better way to put on an epic fight than a flying knee? I expected us to continue to fight. I didn't realize we were going to do a jiu-jitsu match where I'm flying at her and all of a sudden she's going for my arm again. I guess that's one disappointment I had. If I had known she was going to be going for my arms, I would have gone about it differently. I agreed to her kind of fight instead of my kind of fight, and that won't happen again."
I have to agree with Cat here. Who would have thought Ronda would go for an armbar?

Not a gameplan per say, but when Rousey was on late night television, talking about how Holy would be hunting for a head kick, and she said she wasn't going to fall for it.

Lol.

There was nothing wrong in Cats flying knee. Just because Ronda capitalized it masterfully doesnt mean it was a bad move from Cat. People only say that because they hate to give Ronda the credit she deserves.
There was definitely something wrong with it. It looked super uncoordinated and she literally lept into clinch ranch with a judo olympian. A good game plan would have been to use distance
