WMMA Discussion #29

Invicta hasn't announced the full card yet, but this is what's reported on the schedule over at The Underground, as well. Wow, what a terrible card. Even worse, it's at a location only two blocks from where I usually stay when I go to KC. Yeesh

Looks like a charity event for journeymen types. Yikes.

Charlsey Maner on the undercard is neat tho. She's fought some top tier muay thai girls, won gold at the World Games 2022, a Queens cup event in Thailand the same year, and was trying to get into ONE (hopefully someone convinced her that'd be dumb).

Oh my god, it's true:

VETERAN BANTAMWEIGHTS KATHARINA LEHNER AND OLGA RUBIN HEADLINE INVICTA FC 62 ON FRIDAY, MAY 16 IN KANSAS CITY

KANSAS CITY, Mo.
— Invicta Fighting Championships is returning home. The world's premier organization for women's mixed martial arts will host Invicta FC 62 from The Lex at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City on Friday, May 16.

The event will be headlined by a pair of former bantamweight title challengers as Katharina "The German Gypsy" Lehner (9-5) takes on "Big Bad" Olga Rubin (9-5). The two veterans aim to climb back into contention for the 135-pound title, currently around the waist of Brazil's Jennifer Maia. Lehner enters the contest on the heels of one of her most dominant displays in the cage, a three-round boxing clinic against UFC veteran Shanna Young at Invicta FC 60 in February. The veteran Rubin was also in action in February, going the distance with the always-tough Mayra Cantuária.

In the night's co-main event, former Invicta FC and Bellator MMA title challenger DeAnna "Vitamin D" Bennett (14-9-1) continues her march toward the flyweight belt when she takes on Rayla "Índia" Nascimento (11-10). Bennett returned to the organization at Invicta FC 57, quickly re-establishing herself as a contender with a one-sided win over Liz Tracy. Brazil's Nascimento also put the 125-pound division on notice with two straight wins over UFC veterans, including a decision nod over Victoria Leonardo at Invicta FC 60.

Also on the main card, veteran flyweight Milana Dudieva (13-9) collides with Brazilian Amanda "Sardinha" Torres (9-8) and UFC veteran Ashley "The Spider Monkey" Yoder (9-9) returns to the promotion for the first time since 2016 to take on Texas strawweight Abril "Mulan" Anguiano (6-5, 1 NC). The preliminary card will feature prospects Ashley "Smashley" Barrett (1-1) and Quinn Williams (2-1) squaring off at 125 pounds, as well as flyweight newcomers Charlsey Maner (debut) and Alex Lawal (debut). Additional bouts for the event will be announced in the coming weeks.

Invicta FC 62: Lehner vs. Rubin will air via CBS Sports Network at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT. The night's preliminary card will stream live on Invicta’s official YouTube Channel and Facebook Page at 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT. Tickets to the event go on sale Thursday, May 1 at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT via Ticketmaster.

The current fight card can be found below:

Bantamweight: Katharina Lehner vs. Olga Rubin
Flyweight: DeAnna Bennett vs. Rayla Nascimento
Flyweight: Milana Dudieva vs. Amanda Torres
Strawweight: Ashley Yoder vs. Abril Anguiano
Flyweight: Ashley Barrett vs. Quinn Williams
Flyweight: Charlsey Maner vs. Alex Lawal

Bet on the Brazilian
While the Kuwait is undefeated and trains with a good team at GBTT, I’ve personally never seen a fighter who fights with a head covering win a fight. Every time I watched a fighter wearing one, they got smashed or choked unconscious

UFC pics this week:

- Yana Santos vs. Miesha Tate - given that it's the top of the prelims i'm gonna guess that it's miesha's last fight. honestly no idea who takes this one - santos seems to have recovered from her post-baby slump (by being able to sleep more and train better, her words). santos UD

- Marina Rodriguez vs. Gillian Robertson - why is this not on the main card, they're both ranked fighters and the savage is a noted finisher. do better UFC. savage by sub or 12-6 elbows to the tailbone

- Juliana Miller vs. Ivana Petrović - i really want to root for miller, esp since tuf but man is she messy. petrovic is not much better but appears more focused. i can see this going similar to amorim/viana last week (sans finish) - miller too complacent on the bottom with petrovic laying all over her for 15min. i hope i'm wrong. petrovic UD.

Nah. She said she’s interested in fighting Harrison. Plus, former champ privilege

Yeah, no idea. Robertson always goes for the finish, too

Santos by virtue of not being washed.
Rodriguez by Dec. I think her clinch and TDD can keep Robertson off of her. Otherwise I am wrong and Robertson via sub. (this is actually the outcome I prefer). And I also agree that this fight should be on the main card.
Petrovic via lay and pray.

This weeks picks:

Santos by Tate's ring rustyness
Robertson UD. Rodriguez is 38 and age is finally getting her.
Petrovic because it's hard to trust Miller these days. Still... Miller can push the upset (i think)

TATE - Santos has notably never beaten anyone good, ever (nobody won the Viera fight - especially not the fans). I don't expect that to change.

MARINA - Gillian has also notably struggled to beat anyone good, ever. She also doesn't like getting hit (and Marina likes to hit).... Marina on the other hand has mixed it up with a lot of the divs best grapplers, beat a few, never been finished, even went to split dec with the GREAT ONE herself; Gillian does seem to be hitting her peak now while Marina is aging out but I've still got to back M-ROD 😍

MILLER - it's pretty damning to TUF that Miller was a TUF champ - worse than Nicco (who actually had the potential to be good but kinda got ruined by getting the belt too soon). But Miller is a decent grappler, Ivana seems to have a bit of a bad attitude IMO and I can see her giving Miller the fight she wants out of hubris... and losing it.

Miller fight was awful. Glad the audience booed the Couture-leaning. And the yells of ”I WON THAT SHIT!” - embarassing.

Once again beautiful grappling from Robertson. Bueno. A pity she did only get a TKO instead of a strangulation for stats, hehe.

Did Tate fuck up the TKO by fishing for the choke from the back? Should have taken notes from Robertson.

Angela Hill getting spicy in Des Moines:View attachment 1093494
Robertson has no business fighting down the rankings she's finished a top ten girl going for Lemons is exactly what she should be doing. I get Hill trying to get in on the hype tho.

I don't think the tko was there for Misha either she not the most powerful and Yana still looked scrappy enough to hold on. Now that they fought hopefully they're both paired with girls who can make a name off them. I'd do Santos vs Cornhole and Edwards vs Tate.

I’m surprised we haven’t seen more ladies from Lux recruited to UFC yet. They’ve been on Fight Pass for a while now. They’re definitely the current incubator for the Mexico City P.I, though. Julieta Martinez from DWCS last year is working at the P.I. and fighting with Lux now

There are already jokes going around wondering who will be the short notice replacement for Cortez

This should be fun. They both have a history of falling just short in fights. So, should make for some interesting moments
