WMMA Discussion #29

Whoa, did not realize Yan/Jandiroba is in the prelims, which is pretty surprising for the title-shot potential of the fight. Seems like Dana & co. are planning to pretend it did not happen if Wirma wins.

But marketability gonna market, etc.
The PPV is legit stacked but it is a bit much that it's not the prelims headliner vs a woodson fight.

I think matchmaking prefer Verna win I suppose there's money in a rematch with Yan especially if they can lock up Chinese venue for PPV even if the fight fight had multiple finishes and a one sided scorecards. I guess they also have to wait and see how val does Her winning open up a super fight.

Sad to see Cowan lose again, she is pretty cool. Hope she gets one fight - contender series good will or something. The french chick on the other hand seemed insufferable, somewhat Agapovaish energy to her. Had never seen her fight before, even though this was her 4th time around. Odd.

Yan vs Jandiroba went about as expected. Will be interesting to see if the fight gets striken off the records by Dana or if they are willing to risk giving Jandiroba a title shot.

Nice to see Nora continue to climb into the ranking she's older but new blood for wbw. Needs to get on weight and I'm not a fan of her and Perez, let her fight a veteran who's been there forever like Rosa or Aldana. Tate and Yana are fighting each other but one of those two be good enough.
That said I'd rather see Jacqueline the younger better up comer get the best opportunity in Aldana next.

Virna did good to establish herself as the next contender just got to see when Zhang is ready or if she's going for the flyweight belt.

Haven’t watched the PFL card, but Shakalova beating Velasquez is a pretty big upset. Did Shakalova work her butt off to improve? Is Ve;asquez shot? Maybe both? Nothing else on the card was surprising. Liz Carsnooze likely takes the tournament.

WOW FC on Fight Pass had some fun submissions.

UFC: Haley Cowan is a product of LFA when they were in their “bet on blondes” phase. She benefited from matchmaking that made her look good, but not necessarily made her a better fighter. Two of her previous losses by choke, for 3 of 4. Future opponents are definitely gonna be looking for it now.
Jandiroba looked strong, while Yan’s defensive grappling continues to improve. Unfortunately for Yan, it hadn’t improved enough. Good luck to Jandiroba in getting a title shot anytime soon. Not only is Zhang likely to sit out for a while (again), she might be moving up to flyweight, depending on Shevchenko vs Fiorot. I think she’ll get stuck fighting yet another eliminator, likely against Suarez, or having to defend her spot against someone UFC would rather push.

Velasquez being 38 may have helped that, tbh.
I didn't watched PFL also, but Kana x Bishop seemed to be competitive, since odds were favouring Kana during the fight (i was accompanying by a bet app and Kana was the betting favourite at the end of rnd 2).
About Jandiroba... Well... I couldn't agree more.
It's either direct match against Zhang (where i don't see her winning in any form, tbh) or against Suarez title eliminator (great bout btw) or... Hmm... Dern rematch?

i'd give virna a decent chance grappling with weili over 5 rounds. striking, not so much. a smart fight for weili would be to strike, that would tire virna out over 25min for sure. however, weili is all about the wrasslin' these days and i think that would play into a boa constrictor like virna easily.

weili, give us this fight and then you can move up to flw!

meantime ufc 315 not only has shev/manon as the co-main, but alexa/natalia silva on the main card as well. i'm guessing natalia is the backup but i'm not super keen to see alexa get whipped :(

Ayan Tursyn vs. Farida Abdueva
With no UFC this weekend, this will be the fight to watch. A women’s main event in that region is rare, and these are Octagon’s two best (at least until Aleksandra Savicheva decides to fight again). Tursyn is undefeated, while Abdueva has only one loss.

Glad we ended up getting this fight, after it was canceled back in December. It’s a risky fight for Szabova. While she likely takes it, a loss to Pudilova at this point could hurt her prospects. For Pudilova, this would be her biggest win in years, and sets up the rubber match for the title with Cecilie Bolander (both of their previous fights went to split decisions).

This will be fun.

^ thanks for the info on ayan tursyn - i saw that it was the headliner and wondered what the fuss was about. so it's legit yeah, and not a can crusher fight?

I haven’t seen as much of Abdueva, but I don’t think it will be a can crushing, no.

A face to face interview with both ladies fighting tomorrow.

Still making my way through, as the auto translate misses a lot, but both ladies have nothing but respect for each other. Abdueva was surprised the match got made, because she thought Tursyn would be signed to the UFC before she got a chance to fighter her. Abdueva also believes both fighters will eventually be in the UFC/

Sarah Vieitez also took an arm home:

I haven't seen Sarah Vieitez before but I like that her insta handle is 'sarahwrestler', I'm in love already 😍

<BakerNo>Easy fight for SzaboGOATva and will surely rubber-stamp the biggest 'name' on her record... but.... no for belch? wha?

It's kind of funny Szabova somehow isn't the Oktagon champ already and the strap somehow ended up in a novice's hands in the meantime and Szabova still isn't fighting for it.........

It was supposed to be Sazabova vs Pudilova for the title, but Szabova got sick, and Bolander stepped in. Bolander won the title after another close fight against Pudilova. Now Bolander is injured and will be out for a while, and Pudilova picked up a win a couple weeks ago.

I’m not sure who she was managed by before, but a change this late in a fighter’s career is unusual, especially considering how little managers actually do for UFC fighters.

Emily Matins just picked up a win in less than 1:30 about Ten minutes before posting

Cheyenne Bowers picked up a nice sub win last night:

Got performance of the night for it, too:

I’ve seen a couple people on Twitter saying she should get a SWCS spot, but Bowers only beat a girl who was 3-3, undersized at flyweight, and she just lost to Shannon Clark. Now, that fight was close, but Clark was coming off an embracing performance leading to a KO loss at DWCS last year. I also have heard that are going to be less women’s bouts on DWCS this year
