In NYC, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans are called Spanish, but they don't have SpaniardsYes but Latino is distinct from Spanish, they're not literally called the same thing. Like Joel Alvarez is Spanish and Yoel is Latino. But somehow in the case of Arabs, the same term is used without distinction. It would be like if Yoel was called a Cuban Spaniard/Iberian or something the way most Algerians are called Arabs because they speak the language and adopted the religion of Arabs the way Yoel speaks Spanish and is Catholic. However as we discussed, the term Latino is used to differentiate the distinct culture and history of Yoel vs Spaniards.
If you go to the Gulf nations, they will distinguish Arabs (people from Arab-speaking countries) from Ethnic Arabs (people from the Arab Peninsula who look local)
BTW it has nothing to do with the religion, Copts are Arabs and have never been Muslims throughout history. I guess it's the same for neighbouring countries
