He's the best to be sure. And he is gonna be coming back pretty soon.

But a lot of his offensive and defensive strategy is centered around his range finding eye poke. And as we know, with the new rules, he can now be penalized even for extending an open hand to the face, regardless of whether it makes contact or not. And no doubt the refs will be watching him closely.

He has never fought a fight without the ability to use his range finding eye poke.

The range finding eye poke causes damage. It hinders his opponents vision. It makes them reluctant to press in, which keeps them at range making them easier to hit and Jones safer due to his longer reach. And his opponents preoccupation with it makes them vulnerable to the rest of Jones extensive offensive arsenal.

It is something his does repetitively in every fight, regardless of whether he ends up actually poking an eye. It's now illegal and it is a habit he will have to train out of.

Will removing this key part of his arsenal have any measurable impact on his fights????

Who's gonna force him to remove this key part of his game? As far as i am aware the rules haven't changed (could be wrong on this) .

He'll keep using eye pokes. I doubt he seriously considers the consequences of his actions. Just look at his personal life.

The rules have changed since his last fight.

Extended fingers

In the standing position, a fighter that moves their arm(s) toward their opponent with an open hand, fingers pointing at the opponent's face/eyes, will be a foul. Referees are to prevent this dangerous behavior by communicating clearly to fighters. Fighters are directed to close their fists or point their fingers straight in the air when reaching toward their opponent.

Now Jones can be penalized even if his fingers are pointing towards an opponents face, regardless of whether he makes contact or not.

Nope, not a photo shop. That happened.

I was thinking about this the other day and I think he will struggle to be honest, he's still going to be an elite fighter but you watch his fights and he relies on it in every round of every fight.

Will be very interesting to see how he deals with guys who are less hesitant to move in on him because the eyepoke threat is gone.

If he does continue to do it though I hope for a consequent ref.

Would be a shame though if the result of his next fight would be a DQ due to extended fingers/pokes or a decision loss due to too many point deductions.

Lets just hope he keeps his fingers closed.

Hopefully he has been working on it if he doesn't want to get a point deduction. Instead of using it as a range finder he should throw a jab.

Agreed. I think he will still be good without it, but it is basically a hard wired habit at this point. He will have to train out of it, or he will literally get DQ'd in every fight for repetitive violations.

As your pictures show, he poked people in the eye in almost every fight, and yet how many points were deducted? Exactly!

So first we need to see if referees will have the balls to deduct a point if/when he does it.

He poked three fighters, one of which poked him back.

Watch him be the first UFC title contender to lose via disqualification.

With the new rules banning Jones retina-ruiners, and USADA breathing down his neck, Jones next fight will be VERY interesting.

I wouldn't be surprised if he changes it up to forehead jab crossed with a Stockton slap if you get me. Not a big fan but I think one thing for sure about Jones is he's incredibly imaginative. He'll figure something out and it won't be pretty.

do you really need to lie about this?
On TS's OP there are 4 fighters being poked.
and unless you just started watching MMA recently, you gotta know you are blatantly wrong.

I suggest you go watch them fights again.
