Will bare knuckle events be banned?

I was at the Toughman competition in Sarasota way back when the "Cake Decorator" killed the "Navy Seal Bouncer" that led to the event being banned in Florida. I was pretty sad about it, even if it was insanity that they were just letting anyone in the audience step up to fight.

BKFC Seems to at least be a lot more heavily regulated than that, and this fight ended with an unfortunate landing that seemed to do more damage than the fight itself. So it'd suck if they were dismantled over it, when various sports see deaths as well, boxing with quite a few. The owners and commissions should look into ways to improve fighter safety, of course, but I'd assume that's a priority regardless.

one man died in the 1920's from a pitch to the head. this was before MLB wore helmets. not sure why he listed baseball.

more people have died during soccer games, including 7 this year according to wikipedia.

Ray Chapman. Rip.

With the unfortunate passing of Thornton, will bare knuckle events be on the chopping block soon? Or will they adapt and implement new rules? As small as MMA gloves are, it’s evident they do play a factor in making the sport safer.

I know he took a brutal fall at a bad angle, and yes the matchmaking was terrible and should be overseen in the future.

What changes would you like to see in the coming future?
It wasn't BKB that lead to his death. It was a lifetime of combat sports and the messed up way he fell and landed on his neck.

If we are talking long term damage bare knuckle boxing if healthier than both MMA and boxing. If we are talking aesthetics than it is the worst.

It wasn't the lack of gloves that caused it, it was the shady matchmaking.

No gloves makes fighting bloodier, but not more dangerous. You can actually punch a lot harder with gloves.

This. Guys came up with gloves themselves in early UFCs to hit harder without compromising their hands. I think it was Tank who first did it or Don Frye.

Bareknuckle damage is largely cosmetic, infact its hardcore image is a bit of a con. It's up to the commissions to prevent mismatches or call time on careers that are way past their sell by date.

To be honest they should remove wrist, thumb and metacarpal supports for all their fights in BKFC. Some of their fights they have only wrist support and some other fights have a glove that exposes the knuckles but protects everything. It becomes a whole different sport when people can't swing as hard. If you watch older illegal fights with no gloves. There is a unique style to the fighting. It is a much slower pace and people tend to pick their shots. The stoppages look differently. It's not from you losing consciousness.

I don't watch it because of the protection.

No because the fall looked like it was what did the damage. We need to have sanctioning bodies actually do their job and no sanction fighters to fight if theyve had 5ko losses in a row.

I personally think it's a huge myth that gloves are there to protect the hands of fighters, and not the heads of opponents. To me it seems obvious that the naked fist is a deadlier weapon, and a well conditioned fist thrown with correct technique stands little chance of being damaged.

I'm certain we'll see more deaths like this, though I have no opinion about it being banned.

Look if you ever boxed you would know how fragile hands are. The wrappings and gloves are there to protect the hands.

Frankly guys fighting bare knuckle won't punch too hard for fear of breaking their hands. The bones in the skull are much more durable than the bones in the hand. Not saying the brain won't suffer but bone to bone contact, hands lose every time. Just go ask Vitor Belfort.

The bare knuckle punch itself wasn't the deadly part

It was the dangerous matchmaking. 6-18 guy with 5 KO losses in a row vs an 11-1 standout with 10 KO wins.

The guy got spinal damage faceplanting on to the canvas. That can happen in MMA, Bare knuckle, or 12 ounce glove boxing. But the chances of it happening in a squash match are so much higher
You forgot the most unforgivable part - the mismatched Thorton usually fought multiple weight classes below cruiserweight or whatever it was. The size difference was worrying to start with. No legit org has fighters with losing records moving up 20-30lb to fight a killer.

It's asking for something like this.

Hopefully. I've been calling for a ban of that utter barbarism for months now.

My iptv service doesnt get them so yes, it should be banned.

Here's the reality.

Will bare knuckle be banned? Possibly. Would bare knuckle be banned if it was as big as the UFC? Not a chance.

Everyone here seem to be in a agreement it was the mismatch instead of the actually bareknuckle that cause the death. Going be tough sell now to potential investors and causal fans to enjoy the sport of bareknuckle, with the death in a fairly new company.
