Why was Cowboy a popular fighter?

Well here's fun fact I'm sure you didn't know: he's already one of the most popular fighters in MMA even before he's earned title shots, since your question is why he is popular.

And winning the big one doesn't guarantee instant popularity. Even Usman needed to cherry pick Jorge again even after he's beaten him convincingly already and flirt with the Diaz brothers to boost his name. And not really a fan of both but let's be real that even Khabib owe it to Conor when it comes to being recognized worldwide. Just facts. Look at how many followers he got after the Conor fight. If Conor didn't exist in the world of MMA, with all his pull outs, and his title wins only consisting of Iaquinta, Alvarez, Poirier, and Gaethje, imo it's very unlikely he'll be heard by mainstream media. Though, in the MMA world, yes for sure. But popular to the casuals and social media? I bet it's a different story.

Again I believe popularity is earned. Charisma, gimmicks, and being associated with highly known people may help but at the end of the day it's about the impact you made to the sport, the fans, and making them get their money's worth whenever you're fighting. Cowboy's the guy. He did all of that without help from any rivals, just by talking with his fists.. and kicks. Win or lose, he never got booed.

The man is a straight up fighter. Styles may be different but he reminds me of Bisping in the way he grinds and grinds. Flights anyone at any time. Respect to that dude.

He used to be elite, fought often, was an exciting striker, holds a handful of UFC records, and most importantly has plenty of exposure often by headlining fight cards.

And often times he stole the show, even in PPVs, by winning most of the OTN bonuses on those cards.

Nah, your posts makes total sense. Once a guy starts talking about belt colors via post count you know they lost the arguement. I mean he was wondering and has a very much well thought "theory" that a freaking hat and handsome face is what makes a fighter popular, and that you should not be popular to the fans if you didn't won any belt no matter how exciting and likable you are, lol. That's enough to tell you about where he's at as a fan.

The difference is Romero is better than Cowboy by a longshot, it’s not a good comparison
 
That fight anyone anywhere mentality is hard to find. And he definitely embodied that. Add in the fact that he has a good personality and a fan friendly style. It's easy to see why he's so popular. He's also one of the ones to retire way after he's past it. And he's been past it for a while now.

I though he was massively overrated and not impressed with him at all. Then i saw a couple of interviews, in particular his scuba diving story. Now i think he's a legend.

On the whole I respect him

He fights often
Fights whoever
Is mostly in exciting fights
Very skilled martial artist

However, he is a serial choker and that is a major black mark on the guy, he can't handle pressure
