Why was Cowboy a popular fighter?

Cowboy was awesome in his day, very active fighter who would fight anyone and put on an exciting fight every time.

Like most fighters he is having a hard time hanging them up even though he’s clearly a shell of his former self. Nothing wrong with that, the guy clearly loves to fight.
 
Late to the thread but I actually followed MMA from that long ago and Ionger so I can give a real answer unlike most of these guys.

Cerrone was a promising prospect but first became very popular because of his first fight against Varner. Varner was a real good fighter but people loved to hate him. Cerrone got a lot of love in return just for not being quite as polarizing.

Some people felt that Varner faked not being able to continue in order to stop the fight when Cerrone was starting to turn it up and could've finished him because he looked to be fading. That added more to people's affection towards Cerrone, who they wanted badly to dethrone Varner.

Then he had two amazing fights with Bendo and he's been a fan favorite ever since.

People on here have so much recency bias and only remember where a fighter is currently at. Cerrone was consistently a top 10 LW with consistently exciting fights for years. It was not because of the Cowboy hat.

Colby is a schtick. A gimmick. Nobody gave a shit about him so he chose to become an asshole who wore a MAGA hat. The difference between the two is that the hat made Colby. Cowboy's hat was just a part of him.

He was a kill or be killed stylist who could get flashy finishes. Would take fights on short notice against anybody especially if it was to salvage a main event, and fought often. He was also good at interacting with fans so he was personable.
 
Fun fighting style and didn’t play politics. Fighting often will always grow a fan base imo

That Varner fight was great. I believe he won the rematch.

Another history lesson for the newer fans: Bendo 1 was the fight that gave Benson the nickname ‘Bendo’ because he Gumby’d out of so many of Cowboys submissions. Like 6 seemingly locked in submissions. There’s a reason Cowboy never chose to play guard again if he could help it.

WEC was so awesome.

The old Tapout guys made Cerrone popular, then he became one of the faces of the WEC LW division along with Bendo and Pettis, then he was had some FOTN performances that kept things rolling for him.

If one has a problem with Cowboy, that says way more about them than Cowboy.

Whether you like Cowboys or not, your thread was predicated on disrespecting him. You lead out with the theory that Cowboy was popular because of his cowboy hat, purposely omitting the much better reasons he was popular. You also emphasized that he was popular with casuals.

We all get that you were trolling and I think it was a job well done. But you obviously were trying to get people to spaz out on you.

Relax guys ts is a noob who only started is account 2 years ago. He never saw a hot Cerrone.
