What if khamzat already had 15 title wins all against legit number one contenders in his weight class? (minus chael, Who he refused to fight because he said it did nothing for his legacy) Would it be okay to have one legacy fight after then retire?
If he had someone who seemed to be a legit threat and he went "no, I'm too old to fight that young guy", then I would not like it at all.
Just as I was not super excited about Khamzat flipping the crowd off when he missed weight vs Diaz, or him yelling "Allah Akhbar, I kill everybody".
Fighting for the belt is not about who has the best overall legacy. It's about who deserves it the most in that very moment, and who has done the best work in the division recently. For titles and title defenses to actually hold the prestige it should, it has to be that way.
I could perhaps accept that Jones wanted Stipe 2023, when there was no other clear challenger, and Stipe only had been out for a year. But when the fight dragged out, Jones injury, etc, okay fine it's rebooked. I thought that was the perfect opportunity for the UFC to have Aspinall and Pavlovich fight for the real belt, and defend against Stipe and Jon after he healed from the injury.
When Aspinall then won the interim, and even defended it, I thought that there's no way he hasn't earned it now, and that the belt Stipe and Jones fought for isn't the real belt.
Everyone knew it while watching that fight, that Stipe is no longer a guy who should be fighting for belts.
At the very least he should've had to beat one top 5 opponent between his Nhannou loss and title shot, to prove that he still belongs in the title conversation.
But in this moment I think it's time for Jones make a decision, keep the belt and fight Tom, or give it up and fight Pereira.
I would prefer if he accepted the challenge of Aspinall, I also wouldn't mind if he went back to 205 for Alex. I would value his legacy more if he lost to Aspinall than if he never fought him.
Sorry, rambling now, time for sleep
