Why Do Some Big MMA Fighters Have No Chests?

Do large chest muscles actually have negative impact on the lungs ability to inflate thus reducing oxygen intake?

I think you make a fair point.

Bench press is an American enigma. The clean and overhead press used to be in the Olys. Overhead press was the standard for upper body strength until that event was removed from the Olys, and powerlifting took off in USA at the same time (early 70's) The powerlifters adopted bench press for several reasons. Most of the big lifters in the world do cleans and snatches. Powerlifters do the 3 we recognize.

The chest muscles, I believe, are more of a North American-based look at the physical manifestation of power. Much of the rest of the world seems to be more into legs - developed with low squats, and shown in the form of rugby shorts and speedos!

As for fighters - well, funny you picked 3 non-Americans, but, overall, this is something I noticed years ago, too. Wanderlei was super-jacked in his day, and was tight but not huge in the chest, as opposed to what I was used to with every big dude on tv. Bas Rutten, same deal.... chest muscles are not very important to fighting, or much other than becnhing, really. It isn't a functional move, unlike deadlift - which translates to everything. Reminds me - Gustafsson just mentioned his lifting numbers - 540lb deadlift, which is really solid for a tall guy who isn't primarily a lifter. And a 245lb bench - which is basically fuck all.
This. During the old wrestling rivalry between the old Soviet commie block and the US, it was a common notion that american wrestlers looked more buff, with pecs and biceps pumped, while the soviet wrestlers usually didn

Telligman lost his pec as a child and still was pretty successful in MMA, that was shocking to me at the time given how important I thought the benching and incline benching I was doing was for my badassedness.

They have small chests because mma fighters are not BIG to begin with. .. go hit the gym and then you'll start appreciating someone who ACTUALLY is big rather than some smal mma fighter

Carano's pecs are brilliant

It's probably having to do with cutting weight also. you don't need added weight.

I at least know this is the case for Big foot because he used to be bigger than Shane Carwin when he first started fighting.

I don't see any UFC HW champions who have more title defenses than Brock so please tell me how he's not "great"

Carwin's more debateable, but he's still one of only 15 men who have worn UFC HW gold. That qualifies him as great for me

Timmah defended it more times than Brock, and he's got tits.

I spend more time with my fighters building strength and power in their posterior chain instead of building up their beach muscles

We focus more on squats, deads, kettlebells, Olympic lifts...the stuff that builds real functional strength

I don't know the answer, but I'd guess it's about genetics. Great looking / muscular chest isn't going to help you much, so the fighters probably focus on other things.

Best chest in the business by the way:
