Why Do Some Big MMA Fighters Have No Chests?

???
??
?

Maths is not a strong suit of yours I am guessing.

He said at the highest level they lost as much as they won. I would say against top level competition Carwin was 2-2. Lesnar was 3-3, unless you consider Min Soo Kim and Heath Herring to be the highest level.

At the highest level. As in other elite HWs. Shane Carwin was 2-2 against top 15 HWs, 1-2 against top 10 HWs. Brock Lesnar was 4-3 against top 20 HWs. 3-3 against top 10 HWs. That doesn't suggest greatness to me. Unless "great" in combat sports just means high level for a few years, now.

My bad missed the coma, sorry.

Nah, it's fine. Lesnar is a bit divisive, it seems. The phenomena isn't wholly different than it is with Mike Tyson in boxing (though, Tyson obviously achieved a lot more relative to sport). He is often underrated by the hardcore and overrated by the casuals. The truth is, he was a very one dimensional fighter with many flaws that could still beat a lot of top HWs.

Strangely enough, this is something i've previously thought about. Shogun seems to have no chest at all. I'm sure he doesn't do anything akin to bench presses, but his training must not put much stress on his chest.

a fighter with no pectoral

Came to this thread just for this. Can't believe it got to page 4 before he was mentioned.

Well a big chest does not exaxtly mean success in the UFC. Id also think the more mass you have the more it takes to work the muscle. You should rather have stamina and explosiveness.

Some of you may need to reconsider what greatness in the HW division is. I
think you need to tighten up your definition. A LOT. There haven't been a
lot of greats in the HW division, which is why the few we have are
celebrated so passionately.

Better question is why do so many ppl on Sherdog spend so much time checking out the bodies of UFC fighters. Seems like every other day someone posts a pic talking about how ripped/in shape someone is. Bunch of queers

Hmm this kinda reminds me of a theory one of my coaches told us during class one day. For the most part, at least at my gym, in both boxing and jiu jitsu we do our push ups with our elbows tucked in as opposed to being locked out like normal push ups. Supposedly it mimics punching better/ground situations when you're shrimping and stuff. He said because of that it's better for fighters to have bigger triceps as opposed to huge pecs. I always wondered how much truth there was to that statement but maybe my coach was on to something. :)

8 pages discussing the male chest and not a single sexyama pic.
Sherdog... I am disappointed.

shogun had a chest in pride

they are all very flexible and have been doing bjj since young they have more pull strength than push strength

GSP was talking about this on the Joe Rogan podcast this spring. He said that he just has shitty pec genetics, even when he wanted to have a huge chest, he could only bench "2 plate, 2 and a half plate". He said that he naturally just has a huge ass and big legs.

I guess pecs are sort of like calves. Some guys just can't grow them. I don't even know what calves do honestly, because I see guys with no calves that can jump out of the gym.

You can also add Carlos Condit, BJ Penn, Gustafson, Diaz bros, Anderson Silva, Pettis, Aldo, KZ, Cerrone, and host of other fighters to that list.

TS said a small chest for guys who are otherwise quite built, everyone you listed isn't particularly muscular for their weight class and some have rather skinny builds.

Bench press is an American enigma. The clean and overhead press used to be in the Olys. Overhead press was the standard for upper body strength until that event was removed from the Olys, and powerlifting took off in USA at the same time (early 70's) The powerlifters adopted bench press for several reasons. Most of the big lifters in the world do cleans and snatches. Powerlifters do the 3 we recognize.

The chest muscles, I believe, are more of a North American-based look at the physical manifestation of power. Much of the rest of the world seems to be more into legs - developed with low squats, and shown in the form of rugby shorts and speedos!

As for fighters - well, funny you picked 3 non-Americans, but, overall, this is something I noticed years ago, too. Wanderlei was super-jacked in his day, and was tight but not huge in the chest, as opposed to what I was used to with every big dude on tv. Bas Rutten, same deal.... chest muscles are not very important to fighting, or much other than becnhing, really. It isn't a functional move, unlike deadlift - which translates to everything. Reminds me - Gustafsson just mentioned his lifting numbers - 540lb deadlift, which is really solid for a tall guy who isn't primarily a lifter. And a 245lb bench - which is basically fuck all.
