COVID-19 is the specific name of the disease. The specific name of the virus is SARS Carona virus 2.I haven't personally encountered anybody who cares one way or the other. But generally speaking, Covid19 is a much more specific description of the virus, so why not use the official name? Seems sort of obvious. But I don't care if people call it the Wuhan Virus, or whatever they've been using.
But recently a lot of people have been blurring the lines between attacking attacking the Chinese government, and attacking whatever perception they have of Chinese culture and attacking all ethnic Chinese people. It's been sort of sad to see. It's not surprising that Chinese people are fed up with it, and they have every right to stand up for themselves.
At least they don't sweep things under the carpet. That's more than "nothing to see
Well since he cites scientists using this convention, are scientists calling it the "Wuhan virus" or "Chinese virus"? Doesn't seem like it, looks like most call it novel corona virus. Doesn't bother me either way but honestly I see more people annoyed that we're not calling it the "China virus" than I see people offended by that term.
Also lol at him trying to shoe horn in an anti-Islam point to score points against liberals when liberals probably do more for Muslim women's rights than the people who complain about the PC police like Maher.
Burqas are the epitome of sexism and/or toxic masculinity or whatever buzz word you people are now employing. They should be condemned and censured as much as possible

It's not something I claim to be an authority on , it's just something I remember reading about years ago circa the SARS scare .The Kansas pig farm theory is pretty flimsy. Most Scientists and Historians do not buy it. Kinda crazy you thought that was the leading theory.
It is of course possible. But it is also possible COVID19 originated in the US or Canada. Possible but not one of the leading places imo

(1) China is not a race.
(2) Chinese Flu or Wuhan Flu is no more racist than COVID19.

(4) If you are offended, then you are the racist as you think all Asians are Chinese.

Any proof?
Covid-19 is a much later term, I recal it gaining steam in late March. Media wants us to ignore the early descriptive term for the virus in favor of a newer term.According to this Lancet article ( https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30183-5/fulltext ), 12/01/2019 was the first time someone described it, and it was indeed Wuhan.
That article was written at 01/24/2020, not sure if anyone here heard of Covid before what..? Late february?
People are opposed to the new terms because we see it as deliberate attempt to protect the Chinese regime and media's attempt to spin a new narrative. As a liberal, I don't get "offended" when people call it Wuhan virus. The issues I have with the name:
- We already know it comes from China. Calling it "Wuhan virus" isn't going to change a damn thing, yet people act as if calling it that will change our response in any way.
- There's already been racist attacks against Chinese-Americans. Beating the shit out of some Asian dude in San Francisco isn't going to save American lives, so let's not devolve into rage-fueled stupidity.
That said, FUCK the Chinese government, and I hope we start taking our manufacturing out of China.
- There's already been racist attacks against Chinese-Americans.
The intentions behind words is what give them their meaning. You should know this.
Lots of slurs have rather benign literal origins. The N word is just a derivative of the latin word for black. "Retarded" is just a medical description of a condition. "Cripple" and "Handicap" have the EXACT SAME literal meaning, but one is offensive and one is not.
What makes a word offensive is what is intended by using it. If it had been called a "chinese virus" from the start, there wouldn't be an issue. But actively seeking to rebrand a virus for the intentions of deflecting blame is shitty.
As for if "chinese" is a race... I give you hank hill:

No clue about the numbers. But there's no denying the general sentiment against Chinese-Americans has gone sour in the past few months. Speaking from experience living right outside NYC.How many?
No clue about the numbers.
"We've been calling viruses where it came from..."- Bill Maher..
I agree with Mr. Maher for once...
