Social Why Americans are so Fat

So I just threw that out to talk shit (which I tend to do a lot) but I suppose a case can be made that carrying extra mass is harder on your heart even if muscle. But I would also contend that if you are natty and staying within your genetic limits, you aren't going to put much undue stress in your heart as you would if you were on the sauce.

If anything carrying a bit extra muscle is good for burning extra fat, since muscle is metabolically expensive to maintain.

If you're trying to get jacked though that usually involves bulking and cutting cycles and that probably isn't great for you in the long-run, even when done in moderation. You're essentially forcing your body to go where you want it to.

Sugar-free sodas wont do it for you? Granted I'm sure the artificial sweeteners aren't great for anyone but seems like an easy way to not drink a bunch of calories and sugar.
I tried a lot of things. I hate the diet or zero versions of it to the point if that was all that was available, I would quit drinking soda altogether. Been drinking more tea though as a substitute but that comes with another problem of extra caffeine. I'd probably be shredded if I didn't drink coke and I'd be fat if I didn't work out so much.

That's wild that you don't find the zero versions tasty. What's the longest period you've gone without consuming any sugar whatsoever?

I noticed that when I completely stopped eating sugar for long enough of a period not only did I stop craving it, when I do eat it I don't even like it. It's too sweet.

Why not drink herbal teas without caffeine?

There's nothing inherently unhealthy about a cutting or bulking cycle. The idea behind it is that the body is better at doing one thing at at time. Gaining muscle and losing fat involves two different metabolic "pedals" and it works better if you press pedal 1 and switch to pedal 2 when it's time. Pressing both pedals at the same time wouldn't make it healthier, just inefficient.

I would have to imagine that staying at your natural weight on a caloric balance has to be healthier for all internal organs than going on a caloric surplus to add on weight.

So they thrive where the choices are made for them. They could just eat better food here, it's available. Going to the local chain restaurant and getting chicken smothered in diabetes sauce is not the same as prepared in a way that isn't detrimental to your health.

Mmmmm, yeah, but I think it goes deeper than that.

Common sense tells you that a person is going to eat at restaurants more often when on vacation than when at home.

Chicken in diabetes sauce for every meal abroad = no weight gain

Chicken in diabetes sauce for 75% of meals at home = weight gain

Seems like the industrial food in the US is just shittier than the industrial food everywhere else. It's possible to eat healthy here but you REALLY have to try. You have to have the knowledge, the willpower, time, etc. This is probably why it's the middle class and above who can do it while the poor remain fat.

I haven’t had McDonald’s in probably 14 years and that was only because I was on a long drive and had next to no other options. I won’t eat anywhere with a drive through. Health is wealth sherbro.
I had a Mcdonald's yesterday with my family but it wasn't my idea so it doesn't count. Also I generally have this rule of thumb - If you wouldn't snort it don't eat it. Served me well over the years!

You're shedding most of that weight in the subsequent cutting cycle. You're keeping the muscle, which is metabolically active tissue, not fat. If in your mind you're imagining some crazy jacked up dude with arms the size of thighs clearly on PEDs, then yeah he's shortening his life. A natural jacked dude isn't shortening his life. There are many studies showing that having more muscle mass is protective against a variety of diseases in old age. People just doing your average western diet and lifestyle go from being skinny fat or being fat fat (both issues of being under-muscled) in adulthood to being sarcopenic in their old age, essentially a disease of a lack of muscle mass. A lot of things go against you when you're old in terms of being able to gain and maintain muscle mass, so if you didn't maintain muscle in your youth as you enter old age you'll age poorly and become disabled much more quickly. Aside from longevity your quality of life also won't be the same as your peers who kept in shape.

Yeah but then during the cutting cycle you are eating less food than what you need/slow starvation. Again, I just can't imagine that being better for your internal organs and heart than staying at a caloric balance. Then you repeat this process many many times over to boot.

All I know is Atlanta Airport has some of the largest human beings you will ever see.

Also Dallas Cowboy games

Too many fried foods, beer. Chips. Cookies in large ass Portions

In general if you are lighter in terms of weight then you live slightly longer. It might not be a good quality of life though.

It’s trade offs. Bigger body equals more work for your heart. Being muscular and doing cardio as well will condition your heart to handle it better and you’ll be much stronger as you age which has benefits.

Thats the ONLY concession? THAT!?
Well yeah, I don't really eat anything sweet other than sugar in my tea and a Haagen Dazs ice cream bar in bed once a week or so, I drink skimmed milk because I prefer it to full fat, even cereal I have Special K or sultana bran because I enjoy it more than the full of sugar cereal, I like poached eggs rather than fried and eat wholegrain bread rather than white crap because it's tastier. What else do you recommend I 86? If you bring cocktails into this we're going to have words.

Boomers used to say stuff like that all the time, OMG you're starving if you skip a meal. Science hasn't bore that out. If anything we're finding that deprivation in a controlled manner is healthy. On a calorie deficit pretty much all your health markers like glucose sensitivity improve. We know people who eat less calories live longer, possibly because they're exposed to less oxidative stress from glucose metabolism. Your average American is feasting 365 days a year and their blood is maple syrup. Cutting cycles wouldn't hurt them one bit.

I know sherdoggers aren't the best sample size since we're all jacked 6'6 +220 lbs of muscle, but I can't be the only one who's disturbed by this?

I'm a former soldier and a current trucker, so I've been very fit and went to being pretty fat.

At my heaviest I was 245 pounds, slimmed down to 180, and am currently around 190 pounds, and the #1 reason why I'd say Americans are fat is because be have been culturally programmed to eat tasty, unhealthy, and cheap food three times a day.

I could literally write pages and pages about it from what I've learned from listening to 100+ hours of podcasts hosted by doctors but the short version is learning what works for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle. For me, its -
*Drinking 1 gallon of water a day.
*Only eating when I'm hungry, and thats far less than three times a day. Sometimes its once, sometimes its twice. (Intermittent fasting)
*Exercizing three to four times a week. For me, I love my kettlebells and have a long thread about it in the Strength&Conditioning forum.
*My meals are always high in protein & fiber. Typically with eggs or chicken as the main course, or a protein shake with whole eggs mixed in.
*Once a week having a cheat meal as a way to say 'good job for being consistent for a week.'

Convenience kills cause there’s an incentive to keep it going. Don’t wanna walk in? Drive thru. Want something artificially tasty that you don’t have to cook?

I don't get it either honestly. My family has always been skinny it's just genetic for us. I have a scale in the bathroom to make sure I don't drop to much weight. Recently I saw I got down to 160 which was way to low even though people said I looked like I was 180 at least. Bulked up to 200 and now I'm back down to 175. Going to try and stay between 175-180.

Right at the airport in Croatia I saw americans a few time. My God they look so disgusting. Like barely walking and rotten. So unhealthy. I mean we smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol ect. But Americans are another level of unhealthy. They struggle to walk. Pure lard no muscles. Eat a tomatoe dude.
A tomato ok. I'm American as an American I endorse the tomato
