Who am I?

My nationality is controversial. Unlike a lot of the top fighters from where I was born, I'm an orthodox boxer, and unlike a lot of the top boxers from where I live, I'm slick. I was widely avoided for a while but eventually I got my shot in a weight division up and really showed the world I was worth it. I held on to my title for a few fights, but in my arrogance, I lost on cuts to an unheralded upstart. I rematched him and beat him easy. Then I held on to my title for a while, and other than a failed expedition against another ATG a weight division above, I dominated. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and after 5 years, I got schooled in my last bout and retired.
Cuban or no?

Which I get and I don't. I hate the Red Sox for beating my cards in the WS, twice!, but I don't really.

Holmes and Berbick were doing their jobs and certainly didn't do it as cruelly as Ali did to some opponents. Should have been more mad at Ali and his team for putting him in the ring at that point.

Chavez infuriated me for beating my favorites- and usually in a suspect manner... so I'm back to getting it...

Why do you say suspect though?

Slick compared to top boxers where he lives. Sounds Mexican
Its either Cuban or East Euro, possibly a Soviet country,
@ironfist05 is a fan of the smaller weights so it could be Asian as well
I want to say Kid Chocolate, the original one, but I dont think that fits into his summary

Yeah but he says he’s orthodox and slick compared to boxers from his country but cubans are already known to be slick well for the most part.

That's what made me ask if its Cuban or not?

Oh, thinking of the Miguel Angel Gonzalez, Taylor and Whitaker fights.

I should add before restarting an argument that never ends, I think Steele's job is to protect the fighter, not look at the clock and do mental calculation on--- I think he'll be ok for the next ____.

That's what made me ask if its Cuban or not?

Thats what makes me think it’s Mexican lol, rugged wide swinging style with a slick one coming up here and there as to the more brawling style

Ooh ok, I’ve never seen the La Porte fight but heard it was controversial as well. Never was interested to watch I figured since La Porte wasn’t the most technical guy maybe it was a few biased fans saying it.

I was trying to find a slick Mexican or Puerto Rican...

Well, he's Cuban by birth but fought the majority of his career in Mexico.

After my boxing career was over I was an inspector for the NYSAC for a while & Billy Backus was my boss. Backus was the fighter that stopped Napoles on cuts & took the world welterweight title from him back in 1970.

That's right she thought BHop won by a point vs Calzaghe. Good one.

have some friends who watch MMA, but think boxing is barbaric (which confounds me..) when she started doing UFC matches I was at their house and just started laughing when I saw her ringside. they said what? just wait...

her Canelo -GGG card was outrageous.

Oh no, that wasn't just a few biased fans who thought that Laporte beat Chavez that night. I was there at MSG for that fight ( I was a sparring partner for Matt Hilton who fought on the undercard ) & everyone there thought that Juan did a number on him. The decision was horrible IMO.
Laporte & I at MSG 12/12/86

That was also the night that "Bonecrusher" Smith dropped Tim Witherspoon three times in the first round to take his WBA heavyweight title. I worked in Smith's corner as a second.
