when someone's gf sits in

See? You get close to someone and they can tell when you're full of BS.

I would have had her take the photo.

It's rare when someone at the gym brings their girl. Extremely rare, mostly because the place is a tesosterone pot. Being a single guy though, I don't know if I'd go easy on the guy or go extra hard just because.

Eh, being single sucks.:icon_sad:

Just look at it this way being single you don't have to take a girl out anywhere so you can focus on your jiujitsu.

I actually had the reverse happen to me. My GF (of 6 yrs) wanted to watch what we do in class, just for shits and giggles. So my normal training partner, who's like 9 years younger than me, frosh college student, who's normally very cool - he started acting real tough. I invited him over to my house for a UFC event previously, so he met my GF before. I dunno maybe he has a crush on her or something, but when we started sparring, he was going very, very hard, way more than normal. And he was trying to overpower me a lot. He didn't get anything on me and got swept too, but time ran out. I was just thinking man, I hope my GF never comes again, it's just a lose-lose situation.

Hilarious.

For a long time I trained at a club with only a few other guys -- a purple belt/ex wrestler ran the class, two other purple belts, a blue belt, and me (white belt). One day my girlfriend came to pick me up and showed up as we were rolling the last couple rounds -- now I've dated my girlfriend for a while, we're a long way past the innocent-lies-to-impress-you-stage, she's well aware of my relative bjj skill level, watches ufc, etc. Anyway she walks in, the guy I'm rolling with (a purple belt) notices here as he's in my full guard I'm you know, focused, scrambling for an overhook or some shit, and he's like "that's your girlfriend right?" and I say "yeah". He makes his left arm limp and whispers "take my left arm" and I go ahead and armbar it. Without missing a step my girlfriend shouts out "want me to take a picture? that's gotta be the last time you'll armbar him this year"

LOL. Keeper!

We have a rule at John Machado's place -- whenever the gf is there, you let the guy rule you.

Then, after she's gone, back to normal.
This must be why Dr 90210's wife thinks he's so good. I quote: "he's good, he's really, really good!". Rorion will be like: "She's here, quick, flying omoplata NOW!"

He probably at least thinks she's attractive, which is mostly harmless. But it could be that he actually has a thing for her, which could be trouble. At any rate, I'd probably keep him away from my personal life and just train with him at school.

I had a dude that I was certain was a glutton for punishment. Over the course of a 12 week training cycle for his first MMA fight the dude brought 3 different chicks in while he was training. A sister one time, a friend from work, and his GF.

Since these were all sessions where he was getting ready for a fight (and the most physical, as they were the first 6 weeks of training) I really couldnt go easy on him or tell the guys working with him to go easy. He took a couple drubbings, big time. But to his credit, he never once wavered, whined or got tempermental about it. He trained his ass off and never seemed to be bothered by it.

His fight though, he seemed rough on his opponent. You can see it here http://www.hd.net/imma112.html if you fast forward to the 36:22 mark of the show.

But I dont think for most guys having a GF at training is a great idea, for him he seemed to be ok with it.

This is how it should be. I dont think i have had a g/f stand in but im in the military and my Flt knew about me fighting and knew i started bjj because my submission vocab was terribly low and at a low %. well one day right in the middle of class they were roughin me up training for a army combatives tourney and i was tapped like 20+ times from a purple and an amazing blue belt and so gassed that a white belt tapped me with simple stuff. well that very day my flt was doing pt and my flt commander and the rest of leadership as well as quite a bit of my friends and co-workers are lookin into the window and started cheering me on.. i didnt even notice i still took the beating and kept going. thats how it should be the audience should never affect your fight ... even if you have to train that way to make it happen bc i know some of yall have seen or been in matches where the crowd either screwed u over and distracted you or helped you and distracted ur opponent

haha nice one :)

my wife has been around the sport so long its no big deal to her she has set front row for every fight i have had watched me destory people and seen me get ktfo in 19 seconds she has come to the gym before and its no big deal to me if a guy is that mentaly weak to do that becuse his chick is watching he is probley weak in outher aspects as well and he anit a good training partner

ego my friend ego.... girl's want the alpha male and a girl that doesn't understand jits would take a tap out as a sign of weakness...its a situation in which the guy in question has a lose lose situation...he can either go hard and lose respect in the club or be normal maybe get tapped and lose face in front of the lady....so he chooses his ego and girl over his training partners.

Big Big mistake. It makes you look weak as shit in front of your training partners. Plus, if you can't simply explain to your girl that you're all just chilling and trying to work on improvement because your girlfriend wouldn't understand, you shouldn't be dating that dimwit to begin with.

So either explain to them what jiu jitsu class is about, or don't bring them.

My wife does BJJ at my same school, so she's there all the time, no easy rolls for me. :icon_sad:

Let me just say from experience,

Showing no mercy and DESTROYING someone in front of their gf is an extremely satisfying feeling.

I agree with Art.

my wrestling coach always used to tell us if we were pinning someone to squeeze up the hold and look in the stands and wink at his mom or GF right before you pin him. I've done it before and it feels pretty good haha.

It's comical to think about it from the other perspective. I became interested in BJJ from this particular situation, watching my boyfriend roll. I signed up for classes and became completely addicted. I tested for my blue in January, I never see him as proud as when I compete.

Hey good for you. That blue belt looks good doesn't it?

i actually like this rule
it helps the guy out
i mean what if u got put against some1 hard and u knew u were about 2 get tore up in front of her.
i mean if u r gonna get tore up just don't ahve ur gf around. LOL
