I like some trash movies, but I can't say DOOM is better than Shawshank Redemption just because I like it more ( I don't ), when I know SR has the better acting, story-telling, plot, directing, etc.

While I agree with your direction, you are wrong in saying that one piece of art is objectively better than another piece.

Art can not be measured with science. It is objectively correct to say that H2O freezes at 32 degrees, but it is subjective to say that ice is cold. One can be measured, one can not.

So to say that it is objectively true that Sienfeld is funnier than Friends, you would have to measure humor on a scientific level, and you cant. Hence, your opinion is subjective, even if it is overwhelmingly popular.

I cannot believe people still watch this shit after like 20 years. And I place a lot of the reality TV crap that dominates the networks nowadays on Survivor. I mean I get the genius as far as the show runners go b/c you don't actually have to pay any of the "actors". But damn it's boring and repitive.

The reason I ask is because it seems like Seinfeld doesn’t always land as well with people who were too young when it came out. I mean, there were definitely people who didn’t like it during its original run, but I’m wondering if generational differences play a role here.

It didn't land with some people, because it wasn't a traditional family sitcom. It was unconventional, and a lot the jokes had layers to them that you had to wait for a payoff. Shows that break out of the mold like that, no matter how good they are, just aren't gonna land for some people because it's a jarring shift from what they're used to. Shows like "The Office" have that same deal. It's just not gonna click for some folks.

I hear ya, but the fact remains that it must be somewhat highly rated for it to be that popular and for a network to have it on for that many seasons. It's clearly having enough viewers where it's profitable to keep around.

In general it's very overrated IMO as the general public does seem to like it. Most people who know what a good show is don't rate it high but many people do.
