International What is the real reason for Trump's tariffs?

And yet Trump is proposing axing the CHIPS act and putting a tariff on imported chips.

Guess where Intel gets its leading edge dies...
Almost all of the chips come from Taiwan. But that company is going g to build factories in the US.

Maybe Trump is trying to use the proposed tariffs to get something else from Taiwan.

No, they've said they will build factories. They have already. Factories also take years to spin up. Tariffs are likely to just piss off TSMC even more and by extension Apple and Nvidia.

Again, if you want more factories, just subsidize them instead of tariffs that fuck over everyone else. Not to mention the US needs help from the Netherlands for fabs, yet here we are pissing off the EU when no one else can provide what we need.

If thats whats happening though, why wouldn't someone in his party tell him this plan makes no sense? Instead most of them seem to support this. I can accept one man's actions due to stupidity, but not the whole party.

Someone aside from him must think that these tariffs will achieve something, right?
Republicans (traditional conservatives) who have spoken out against trump have had their careers decimated.

trump supporters have an unwavering support for him, even when its clearly against their own interest . Remember some were calling to kill Pence when he tried to uphold the constitution against trumps command

According to people like Doug Ford, when he talks to republican counterparts they have no clue what trump is trying to achieve, but theyre afraid to say anything for his (their) base.

Dont have to time stamp it fight now (know its kinda long) maybe later

Ford is Germanys fourth largest car manufacturer now

Auto manufactures are saying the tarrifs will HURT Us car companies
They will if they actually happen. I think of them as leverage for a comprehensive agreement.

Nobody wants destruction like that.

No more Euro booze for you guys.

200 % tariff cuts you off.

Belgian beers are the best in the world, but Donny says no, sorry.
Belgium makes nice beer but no one in the US that knows anything about beer drinks anything that isn’t bought directly from their local brewery.

Elements of 1-3. I think he's also just got his mind made up that this is the best path forward and will see it through, for better or worse. Pretty sure that he wants to eliminate income tax, and thinks tariffs are the way to do it.

The status quo has America 36 trillion dollars in debt and forever climbing, with poverty running amok. Nothing wrong with trying a different approach. Might be disastrous, but he's shooting his shot. Time will tell if he hit the target or not.

I am. Tariffs on vehicle manufacturers is a bad idea for all nations who build them.

Most of the bigs make their products in multiple countries.

What tariff rate do you propose to replace income tax revenue?

You don't see to understand the numbers involved here.

And yet he's trying the same approach he did during his first term. Increase deficits by reducing tax revenue, damage the economy with tariffs, and increase military spending.

Trump's Achilles heel is the tariff situation with cars and trucks. It's the dud in his hand. He's bluffing.

He promised a boom in US production, so he'll have to back down and seek compromise. This is a global situation that needs a global solution.

China would like to sell their cars here, and vice versa. Why not?

Fuck! This all sucks so much! Watching the stock market erase all its 6 month gains in one week has been such a huge gut punch, and yet here we are, more threats to everyone.

Seriously, the economy was finally finally starting to improve, and 6 months ago when I told my wife "it's finally better and he's going to fuck everything up" and he's fucked everything up so much faster than even i thought he would, and nobody knows why.

If Elon has one policy goal above all, it'll be keeping BYD out of the US market so that Tesla doesn't get its shit pushed in.

I have a close eye on Mr Musk's activities. He's thinking beyond Trump's 4 years.

The problem with a lot of you is that you don’t listen to trump. He has given you the reason albeit a bad one but that’s his reasoning.
