What decade did Western Civilization peak?

When poverty is obese and we can't define what a woman is life is pretty good on top of that mountain. We rule the world with zero worry of the other countries

the 1950s for sure
80s were fun and the best decade from an entertainment/fun standpoint, but degeneracy was already rampant in that decade and "lol cocaine" is a blatant marker for a civilization on the downtrend

Since we're nearing the decline, Im wondering.. Say youre a civilization 1000 years in the future looking at a graph of prosperity and peace in western civilization. Sure, at no point in time was it ever a utopia, and certain groups of people were suffering & being oppressed... But , compared to the rest of human history (Filled with war, suffering, tyranny premature death and misfortune) it was statistically the most peaceful/prosperous point in human history.

What decade would you consider to be the most prosperous/peaceful?
90s imo. Socialist block was dissolved and the West had no contender. Was not as decadent as now.

From the fall of Berlin Wall in 1989 to the rise of illiberalism in mid 2010s.
You probably aren’t aware, but conservatives have, for decades, been complaining about the “rise of liberalism,” in the 80s, then the 90s, then the 2000s. In the 90s, it was the same exact stuff. Just substitute political correctness for SJW.

The world, as a whole, gets more progressive over time. There is no “wave of liberalism” that occurred in the 2010s, just like there wasn’t one in the 2000s, the 90s, etc.

The only two times there were sudden massive paradigm shifts to more liberal cultural ideals were when the slaves were emancipated, and when the civil rights act was passed. Everything else has been a gradual shift toward more progressive ideals. Simply put, that’s how the world works.

Just another what decade do you miss / when were you young - thread

<Grimes01>
I don't necessarily think so. All the signs of the downgrade of our society are there; the cracks are starting to show so to speak. Oh well, we had a good run I guess.

Pretty much, I think really being a conservative just entails a high degree of wilful blindness to how many times a "sky is falling" prediction has been made and remade. The same fear/hate mongering tactics are used decade after decade just the targets change, black men, homosexuals, transsexuals were all "a threat to our women/children".

The world, as a whole, gets more progressive over time.

Honestly though I'm no longer so convinced that is the case, maybe on a very long scale it maybe true but I think the idea that were moving to a freer more liberal society as a constant advancement has been seriously tested in the 2008 recession.

A big issue for me is that what we think of modern western society really was IMHO forced upon it in the 30's and 40's by the threat of communism, capitalist societies were forced to adopt a lot of socialist policies to stave off the threat of a much larger shift that would remove even more of the wealth/power of the elite. Since then though socialism has gradually been rolled back and today I think were in a situation more akin to the robber barron era and capitlists and conservatives are starting to think allying with the far right is a better option again as they did in the 30's.

The 1950s was surely America's peak as a country (by far), but pop culturally, the 80s were the best.

The ironic thing is that modern conservatives would call someone running on the polices that Eisenhower did a filthy communist, they look back to the 50's as a perfect era but only in terms of its bigotry, their view of its economics it just total fantasy.

Depends on metric you use.
Marriage, family, wealth equality? 1950s
Justice freedom and music? 1970s
Tech, rap, unipolar military dominance? 1980s

2000s on? pretty much try hards and neo-liberal shit house decades which left ~50% behind in the American dream. Drive through our inner cities or rusted out rust rust belts, where people are hooked on crank and fentanyl if you don't believe me. We are becoming like Brazil, rich armed gated communities with Favelas next door. 2000's are first decades life expectancy went down not up.

This was once the premier beach in Cali - tell me we're not a society on the wane

I wrote ILliberalism, not liberalism. Meaning the slow corrosion of democratic liberties and liberal institutions (liberal in the classic sense, not the US meaning).

Marked by, for example, the rise to power of Bolsonaro and Trump in the american continent, the growth of far-right in Europe with some countries like Poland and Hungary moving towards being de facto dictatorships.

Late 90s early 2000s.
Pro Wrestling was at it's peak, Pop Punk and nu metal music was all the rage, the internet existed but it still hasn't completely find itself in everyone's pockets.

Yeah, I'm a fan

Interesting. I’d like to here more about how their citizens have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms, protected rights to free speech, the right to freely assemble and protest, no state income tax and so on..

I think he's confused with basic family values, which have declined in Russia...... There's loads of poor Russian's nothing has really changed..... They still live a shit life, with the few that have the majority of the wealth....... A bit like how the west is going.....
