Just finished the main campaign of Monster Hunter: Wilds.
It must have taken me about ten hours or so to polish it off. AI support system made it a doddle.
The combat is engaging to play as the presentation has impact but the radial menu is a nightmare to navigate in the heat of battle. It's fun, though honestly, I don't know if it is better or worse than Worlds. It looks better, feels better, but it's also easier and, though I respect new types of monsters being introduced, older monsters are missed. Also, though a few of the boss fights are spectacular, the substance isn't there compared to Worlds. It's not as beefy on content as Worlds was at launch either. I also had zero reason or incentive to catch monsters either. I didn't find any tranquilizer ammo, or have a reason to use any traps. Fiddling with items wasn't worth it.
It's a gorgeously designed world and I'm hoping that post credits, I'll have a reason to visit all areas again. I kind of prefer the main game being more like Worlds Guiding Lands. It'll be nice to head on to gather and to hunt, as opposed to working through menus all the time. That's still there, if required though.
Storyline is, there. It's supposed to be hard hitting and moving, but it's twaddle. Characters are likeable, but also utter, pretentious wusses at times, idiotic at others. If I met them in real life, I'd like them, but they'd do my head in as well. It lacked grit. It's really odd how Capcom tried to shoehorn in environmentalism in a game that's based around killing things for materials.
Even though the game was designed beautifully, it has issues with dull textures and faded textures at times. I'm getting the impression that the Xbox Series S is going to be technologically obsolete sooner rather than later.
It's not as good as Worlds was at launch. The environment may look prettier, but Worlda spanks it everywhere else.
I'll keep playing though. It's a charming game and I'm expecting a lot of updates and improvements in the months to come. Capcom were excellent with it in Worlds. Also, the community is probably one of the only communities in gaming to be unreserved supportive and not be toxic.
7.5/10, but should improve over time.
