What about today would most impress a person from 150 years ago?

I think I've only tipped those guys once. I aint paying to take a piss.

tbh i was tryin to find the segregation clip from the new season 4 boondocks episode but i guess its not up yet :(

I think people answering with technology are presuming they'd give a fuck in the first place.

If you plucked someone out of the 1880's and dropped them into our world for 15 minutes, I highly doubt they think twice about all of the complex technological marvels that we have, and are immediately more impressed with things of social and/or cultural relevance to them.

Space travel, woman's rights, advancement of medicines, sanitation, food preservation, black presidents, gay marriage, etc. These are the things that would make the most immediate and powerful impression on them, in my opinion.

It would take time for them to come to appreciate/understand our tech.

yup agree 100%.

they would struggle to comprehend what a smart phone meant or why what it was doing was important.

A race car ride or an airplane ride or rocket ship ride would be the most impactful thing you could expose them to.

I definitely think it would be a technological phenomenon and not a cultural one. Too me it seems a cultural event, like having a black president, is something a lot of people from the past would be shocked by, but it is still something they would have been able to imagine could happen eventually.

Some of modern technology today is not something you would ever have been able to even imagine could exist back in 1860. So my bet is the television, the telephone or the airplane.

An astronaut video on a smartphone inside a plane

Transportation tech like airplanes, and space travel would definitely impress, but I think a simple skype conversation with someone on the other side of the planet would be more baffling to them.

Well when people travel from third world countries, the technology isn't what baffles them. It's the culture that is most jarring. That's why the term "culture shock" exists and "technology shock" doesn't.

Technology is rarely incomprehensible, as you can always make comparisons. "A 'smartphone' you say? By golly...it's like a phonograph, telegram, camera and town map all rolled into one thing."

Compare that to: "A colored president, you say? A colored man is the president? A COLORED PRESIDENT!?!" *Faints*

It's more like:

"A smartphone? Holy fuck, that is amazing!!!"
"A black president? That's nice, I guess" he says as he's looking at porn on the smartphone

The answer is a TV or computer or the Internet or a smartphone
That or motherfucking snakes on a motherfucking plane

I think transportation would be mind blowing.

But the thing they would appreciate the quickest would be how clean we are compared to then.
