I'm not sure that Ross Pearson is a "Wolf", but yeah Couture could have started off a bit smaller. The last name gave him a bigger opportunity he would have got otherwise.
Pearson isn't a world beater. He's never fought for the title in the UFC, he's popular in Britain and as everyone knows, Britain is in Europe. Randy used to fight in Europe a lot as he lived there during his army days, spoke some German etc., UFC was probably hoping to cash in on his name recognition, if he won, great they'll give him an even higher profile fight and make even more money of the Couture name, if he lost no biggie I don't think he is signed to anything like the Hector Lombard contract or even Gilbert Melendez's contract.
Melendez was the only Strikeforce champion given an immediate title shot, that isn't an accident, that is reflective of how the UFC matchmakers think. Melendez in California can sell tickets, the fight isn't on PPV, it is a lot easier to headline let alone co-main event when not on PPV.
PPV is funny as only Americans and Canadians have to pay for it, yet it clearly is the most profitable distribution method. I wonder why the UFC or Boxing doesn't try harder to go PPV in Europe and Asia?
Soccer has many, many networks but for the world's most popular sport, it isn't a PPV money maker, though it does support premium specialty channels. I think because boxing/MMA is a not a team sport and certain fighters have become almost larger than life in the Ali or Mike Tyson mould that punters as the British call them are willing to pay just to see one person fight, neither Ross Pearson nor Ryan Couture are of that magnitude of importance. This was a minor card in Sweden featuring Swedish and European fighters. GSP, Manny, Floyd are in another league as far as drawing power.
