Was Frank Mir right about flyweights?

I agree with Mir. As biased as it might be, it's hard to get into watching guys fight that are way smaller than I am. I don't mind Featherweight but Bantamweight starts to push it and Flyweights is my breaking point. For as skilled and talented as they are, it looks like little kids fighting. It just looks funny and isn't appealing. Guys shouldn't be 125lbs.

I agree. 145 should be the lightest division. It's hard to respect a division where the fighters are smaller than the women's division.

I don't doubt that they have skill, but I also don't doubt that they could easily bulk to 145 and have good careers.

I would personally cap things at 145. But I understand the long term goal of Zuffa getting into Asia, where 125 and 135 would be more accommodating.
 
At the end of the day, if you can't appreciate fighters like DJ and Faber because of some label pounded into your head by the UFC, it's your loss. Those guys are awesome. I wouldn't even know how much they weigh if the UFC didn't mention it nine hundred times during a fight. That's why boxing excels in this regard.
 
I can't take the guy seriously, someone who gets hilariously KO'd and has bad hair shouldn't be taken seriously

Those guys aren't really 125, they cut serious weight to get there. Most of them are 145 in camp, and walk around at a very fit 155. If MM had the same body fat percentage as the average American he'd weigh 170+ pounds.

I wrestled as a heavyweight in college, and would always be amazed by how strong the lighter weights were for their size (the strength/weight ratio is higher when you're stronger, presumably because strength goes up as a square, weight as a cube). And it was always a blast to see big guys with no wrestling walk onto the mats for a try out, and then get tied into knots by a 135 pounder. Size matters, that's why they have weight divisions. But most people who look down on the flyweights (ie most average viewers) would be in for a world of hurt if they got into the cage with MM.

I think Mir was basically saying that people are idiots. Mir could certainly beat MM or any flyweight. Most of the people saying disrespecting them wouldn't have a chance.

It's depressing to think about, but size makes an incredible difference. And the skill gap has to be gigantic to make up for it.

UFC 125er vs untrained +220er would look much worse than Fedor vs Zulu.

why not? I love freakshows. Benavidez has nothing to do, make him face some 250 pound tough guy in some FS1 co-main event. pay the moron that accept the fight with lifelong supply of PPV.

People always brng this comparison up, but the difference is that there is an instantly recognizable science to boxing. No average person would think "I could out box those midgets". UFC is widely considered a no holds barred contest. This is why your average 220lber thinks they could just ragdoll the little guys, if they got a hold of them. They believe techniques like takedowns, and grappling, would be ineffective just due to the weight difference.

Not saying it's a correct way of thinking, but it's the reason why you never hear the same sort of criticism made against boxing.

Maybe you're one of the 130 lbs guys,because if you were around 220 pounds you'd see how easy you'd pick up a midget like that and throw him around as a Mc Donalds toy.

He just doesn't have the strenght to take you down or really threaten you a part from kicking your balls either.
There's a reason why there are weight classes.
