Warhammer 40k

Man I wished that I followed Warhammer instead of video games when I was a kid.

To have all of that lore to read through, a real for life hobby?

I haven’t read a HH book in years, they were getting worse and worse as time went on. Has anyone read any recent ones? The only author I really cared for was ABD when I quit

Which ones would you say were bad?

A lot of people don't like Battle for the Abyss, Descent of Angels, Fallen Angels, Nemesis and The Outcast Dead but with maybe the exception of The Furious Abyss I enjoyed all the other books.

I am on book 18 "Deliverance Lost" and it doesn't have the best reviews but I dig it so far.

The only ADB HH title I've read so far is "The First Heretic" and it is one of my favorites.

Also, I've started a 3D printing project making my own Warlord Titan. Andybody want me to do updates as I go along? It'll probably be a month+ project just to get everything printed and fit.

Sure.

In the beginning...

Here we go, the first update on what is looking to be a major undertaking. I found a file set on Thingverse of a Mars Pattern Warlord Titan. The thing is super detailed and the creator specifically says it was not created with any eye towards printing it so parts aren't compromised in their detail, but it also means some of it will be a challenge to print. Some parts are weird shapes and will require sectioning (i.e. cut into multiple parts and glued back together) in order to print them. And there are no tolerances for fitting pieces so there's going to be a lot of sanding and filing to get smooth and tight fits.

My printer is a MakerGear M2 Rev.E Duel Extrusion machine. I have it in a custom enclosure with a plexiglass front, LED lighting, and an air filter. I'm printing everything at 0.14mm layer heights with a 0.35mm nozzle. Most of it is going to be PLA but I've got a spool of PETG sitting around and am burning through that now. PLA has the advantage of being quick and easy to print as well as cheap, but the print quality isn't quite as nice as the PETG. For a project of this scale the time and cost tradeoff are more than worth a compromise in print fidelity. And the compromise is really not a big one, you'd need to hold things up side-by-side to really see where the faults are. Anyways, here it is printing a shin:

Here's everything that I have so far. I have the head, the base of the torso, the pelvis, one foot, and one thigh. Nothing has been fitted or glued yet. The way some of this goes together I'm waiting to have all the major components printed before starting preliminary assembly. The last things to print will be the armor plating, and those are a good ways off.

Awesome work man
Whats the final standing height going to be?

It should be pretty much the same as the official forgeworld model. So somewhere in the neighborhood of two feet.

Once I've got everything sans-armor printed up I'm going to have to make a decision: stick with the Mars Pattern or venture out on my own and design Lucius styled armor plating:

Wow that'll loom amazing man
Look forward to seeing the progress

This guy does some amazing lore videos. I really want an open world 40k game

This post is perfect!

People say the Warhammer 40k universe is overpowered. Let me tell you this... You can't be overpowered if everyone is overpowered

Let the dry fitting begin!

I've been making a lot of progress on my printing. I now have the main structure for the feet, legs, pelvis, and most of the lower torso. Still to go is the arms and upper torso. But the upper torso includes the main reactors so I'll need to make my choice of Lucius-or-Mars before printing them. Here's some pictures:

I've now started to do some dry fitting. Because of the way the model files were made there are no allowances for printing tolerances. This means I need to do a lot of filing to get things to fit properly. This is because when printing you can't actually get perfect 90 degree corners. So all exterior/convex mating edges need to be filed down to mate against the interior/concave edge's curve. It doesn't look like much when you eyeball the bare parts but it makes a huge difference in fitment. Here's a couple pictures of some gaps I still need to fix:

_gap2.JPG

Another thing about this project is that you really don't appreciate the scale of one of these titans until you've seen it in person. Sure, you understand from pictures that they're pretty beefy, and there's a lot of scale shots around, but there's just something about holding a part in your hand and realizing how hefty it is. For example, just one thigh is as big as an Imperial Knight:

Lastly, I'm pretty sure at this point that I'll be doing my own Lucius variant. As a test I've worked up an alternative version of the foot guard piece that goes between the toes. I chose this because it's the smallest of the parts that would need updating and I can print out both versions quickly to compare them in-hand and on-model. Here's the renders:

foot-guard2.png

So that's where things sit right now. Currently I'm printing up the shoulder armor mounting trusses, then I'll be doing the arms, followed by the guns. At that point I'll have everything printed before needing to commit to which pattern I'm going to do (leaning heavily towards Lucius, it'll be a lot of modelling work but I'll have a one-of-a-kind centerpiece).

Questions, comments, concerns?

WH40K needs a legit anime series going for it. For the life of me I don't understand why GW doesn't partner with Netflix and make that shit happen.
