Warhammer 40k

Hello my dudes. Hope the holiday season has treated you well. I'm looking for some feedback on a design. A little background: about two and a half years ago I was working on a "Lucious Pattern inspired" Imperial Knight armor kit. I finished the design but after a bunch of failures I don't want to go into I was never able to make a saleable product out of it. And so it sat on my shelf. But recently Peopoly came out with their new large-format Phenom resin printer, which looks like it would be able to overcome the hurdles I ran into and make my idea a reality. Before dropping nearly $2k on a new printer I want to make absolutely sure that the design I have is the design I want to produce.

So what I did was I went back to that old file and found a ton of little things I wasn't happy with. There were enough that I just said "fuck it" and started from scratch. I grabbed my calipers and reproduced all the mating surfaces (again). Once that was done I was able to use the old file (I was still happy with the broad strokes of the design) to quickly produce the redone body, shoulder, chest, and hood (sans fine detail, I want to check the final fitment on a high-res print before I fuss over rivets/vents/etc). And here it is:

An interesting comparison is how different the redone mating surfaces are. I've alligned the old parts with the new parts (highlighted in yellow) and you can easily see how different it is. I'm honestly surprised the old one even fit.

Anyways, the thing I actually want some feedback on is this: a new head design. The plastic masks that GW made for their kit don't really fit the new angular aesthetic. It's basically only the skull mask that still works, the others are far too curved. I'm thinking I might as well try to do up a new head design that fits in better rather than just a mask. What I've come up with so far:

This is just a rough outline of shapes and concepts, any final design will need significant refinement and extra detailing. I went with one large central eye with four smaller sensors around it and a set of atmospheric sniffers (aka chin tentacles). Comments, questions, concerns? Think it's awesome? Think it needs to be tossed in the bin and start over?

I like the idea of optics giving it more of a machine look (great for a mechanicus army) but i love the living machine of death look a face gives it

Very HAL9000 / Shockwave decepticon ish. My gut reaction would be to play up the resemblance to shockwave, maybe give some clearer visual homage to him (like a broad hexagonal/octagonal head, or some kind of horn-like appendages). But that's just me. It's almost guaranteed to end up looking goofy, and I don't know if you're going for that look.

Well, I tried developing the idea and it looks like shit. I'm actually embarrassed by it, but I asked for opinions, so fuck it, here we go:

Any way of putting it into context? Like adding it to the screenshot of the armor plating you posted earlier? Would perhaps make it a bit easier to judge.

So I have a huge warhammer fantasy army (high elves) and some extra 40k stuff. It's not in great condition but anyone worth their salt could glue it back together and fix it up. Some amateur level painting a lot not painted at all.

Heres the thing; I dont want to fuck with ebay and fees. So where can I get rid of this stuff for a couple hundred bucks(way less than I spent on it) and dont have to mess with auctions and crap?

The lens shutter and cables would have to go. Adding a boom sensor array on the "chin" would give it more design features while making it appealing.
Dunno about a bare lens, not a whole lot of visual interest there. I'm now convinced extra chin features just turn out goofy (or I'm just not a skilled enough designer to make them work).

Doesn't look it it would work

Agree that the cable beard should probably be removed.
I kind of like the shutter lens though.
Maybe the shape of the head should be reworked, but dropping the shutter lens outright sounds a bit wasteful. It fits the theme, and is pretty unique (I don't think GW has put an actual shutter lens on any of their models?).
It does look like the details of the lens are so fine it might get difficult to print, but at that scale maybe it is big enough?

Some of their FW knight heads have had shutter lenses, but they discontinued them. The mechanicus versions might still have them. For printing it shouldn't be a big deal for a high-res resin printer, but it would be a challenge for an FDM.

I'm thinking of taking a second pass at it. I have some ideas on how to change it so it might be a bit more cohesive with the hood armor piece.

Gave it another shot, I like this result WAY more than the last one. Interestingly, other than two features this design is horizontally symmetrical: the top half is a mirror of the bottom half.

Much improved. For the record, I have no idea what you’re making, but I definitely like this version best.

I'm hoping to produce a resin kit for sale that will replace all the armor panels: carapace, shoulders, hood, shield, chest, crotch, thighs, knees, shins. Here's an old pick of the previous iteration's prototype:
_quarter.JPG
I'd also like to do a second add-on kit that includes head (what I've been posting), missile pod, and weapon guards. I've had this idea for years now but various setbacks have kept me from implementing it. I really want for this year to be the year it works out, but I'm not holding my breath

Seeing this thread reminds me; A couple of months ago (see post #1623 itt) I posted a few pictures of a model I was working on. At that point I still had to print a prototype, sort out the inevitable heap of things that didn't work or could be improved, et cetera.

I just got done with a "final" printout the other day (yes, it has taken me this long).
I put "final" in quotation marks because there is still a lot that needs improving. But I think I've reached the point where I won't bother putting any more work into this particular project for the foreseeable future, so here goes.

I apologize for the poor quality of the pictures, and the lack of finish on the printed pieces and assembly. I spent a hellacious amount of time printing and reprinting various pieces of the model, and I just couldn't be bothered to keep cleaning up each part. As for the pictures, I don't have the space or lighting to take better pictures atm. This series of photos are taken on top of a toilet seat, because that was the best option available to me on short notice...
I suppose you'd better squint a bit and take in the general shape rather than the details.

Some notes:

1. I decided to remove the rider entirely. When seeing the model in real life the rider and skull throne just didn't work at all. Looked like a big unshapely lump on top of the snake. Removing the rider and throne improved the whole, as well as making the model more printer-friendly by not having so many small fiddly bits.

2. The snake scales came out much better than anticipated. Not saying they look great or anything, but I anticipated enormous problems printing them et cetera. Good to know I have a (reasonably) simple method of making scales for future projects.

3. The model in the pictures below is overwrought with details (spiked body, coffins, stalactites, skulls in the rockside et cetera). The current prototype is kind of an "all condiments included" version, where I've put every detail I could think of into it. If I were to put more work into this project I'd probably remove a lot of stuff, but I can't be bothered to work out which ones atm.

4. The complete model is hideously large (20cm x 15cm x 23cm). You could theoretically remove everything below the tomb, or possibly even below the base of the pillar, and shrink the model to manageable size (the snake+tomb is removable from the lower part of the model as it stands, btw). But again, I can't be bothered.

5. The printed prototype in the pictures is a patchwork of pieces because I ran into all sorts of problems with my printer not being large enough to print larger objects (like the base) in one piece, and with pieces warping (the tomb in particular), or my computer just crapping out on me when I tried to solidify too large objects, et cetera.

6. I kind of like the banana shaped cutouts in the base. I realize the vast majority might consider them pointless distractions though.

Next project will be something more manageable. I've begun work on a techno-barbarian style of fing. See pictures below. Still in the very earliest stages, and just about everything will potentially change drastically. I rather like the aztec chainclub however, so that one probably stays in. We'll see about the bullet coif (might not print well).

I'll likely end up making a series of guys on this theme. Feels like there're all kinds of ideas you could use, like neck stretching rings, native american-style war bonnets made from bullets and rockets, car engines strapped to backs, techno-augmented alaskan moose, et cetera.
