Warhammer 40k

Mechanicus is a TBS akin to X-Com. Inquisitor is an ARPG akin to Diablo. Armada is an RTS akin to Homeworld.

None are 2D or isometric (which would be like the original Fallout 1+2). But none are AAA titles either; they're all handled by small developers and I don't think any got console releases (to be fair they're also not genres the usually lend themselves to consoles).
I'll try to find inquisitor

Figured I'd semi-hijack this thread again to post some pictures of a model I'm making for 3d print.

I made a post about it ITT a while back, but I can't be bothered to find the reference number. Original plan was to make a Frank Frazetta-inspired giant snake rider. Ended up having to scrap that concept because it didn't turn out any good. So I changed concept mid-stream so to speak, and made more of an undead wight-lordy sort of character using unashamedly ripped off Warhammer aesthetics. The concept is a bit tacked on, what with the original draft having entirely different concept in mind. But all things considered I think it turned out pretty good.

I believe I'm near finished now, with just some final touches and fine tuning for print left. (Which in reality probably means I'm about halfway done...).
Might add some bats, rats, snakes, scarabs or suchlike swarming out of the broken cell door, and I might remove some spiderwebs, et cetera. And I don't really know what to make of the base of the model- I don't like the idea of just ending it at the base of the tomb, because it makes the model look a bit bottom-heavy. The giant skulls added at the bottom are just a placeholder until I figure out what I want to do. Also thinking of turning the wyrm's head around some to make it look more lifelike and break the symmetry some.

Once I've worked out the kinks for 3d printing, I'm thinking of maybe trying to sell the model schematics online. I'll try to remember to post a physical version of the model once I've gotten a prototype printed. That might take some time though- it'll likely take my printer some 40-odd hours just to complete the actual printing process.
Out of curiosity though; does the model look like something any of you'd be prepared to pay money for? I'm not asking you to buy it, obviously. I'd just like some input on how close I am to actually making something commercially viable.

I'm very impressed with how that looks. But, to give you the honest answer: no, that's not something I would spend money on. The artistic vision is definitely there, but the final product is still something obviously done by an amateur. I really hope that doesn't dampen your enthusiasm, because you've made exceptional strides in your modeling ability. But I, and I think most people who would be in the market for 3D printing files, have certain expectations for the fidelity level on something I'm spending money on. For example, this model [LINK] is free (with an option to leave tips) and it is basically a professionally detailed model.

So. Very cool? Yes. Commercially viable? ...no, I don't think so.

Thankee-sai. Honesty is what I'm looking for. And I'm not exactly surprised.
I think the sheer scale of the model is part of the problem. Considering how large it is, the model would basically be the centrepiece of a tabletop army. So the quality demands automatically become higher than if it's just a rank-and-file pikeman or the like. Not to mention the work required to draw the model is exhausting, to the point where you start cutting corners. Making all the various parts gel with one another, and finding the energy to actually give each part the attention it requires, is beyond me at this point. Next time around I'll probably settle for making a simple man-sized model.

At the sime time, my impression is the level of quality of models available for 3d print varies immensely. I've seen plenty of stuff that's lightyears ahead of anything I could make, especially the models intended for 54mm scale or larger. I've no illusions there.
But I've also seen a lot of very rudimentary models available for sale. I don't know if anyone actually buys these models, and I certainly wouldn't pay for it myself. But when comparing myself with the lowest-tier competition, I don't really feel like I'm out of my league (although to be fair the lowest-tier products looks like something made by 8 year olds).

Wow, I am shocked by how bad a couple of those shapeways offerings are (that gun turret? My god, I could do better than that in high school 20 years ago). Yeah, your snake dude is way better than some of those.

You're also right about the size being prohibitive. Something like that would likely cost hundreds of dollars to have printed. And if somebody is going to drop that kind of coin they'll expect perfection.

Yeah, Shapeways or any similar middlemen would likely charge a small fortune for printed copies of the snake rider. I can't even guesstimate, but it has to be 100$ +, at least. 200$? Some astronomical number, anyway. I wasn't even considering that an option. Selling .stl files is within the realm of possibility, but designing models that are good enough and cost-efficient enough for selling physical copies of is something I'll leave off until some distant future date.

Warhammer 40K could be the next big movie franchise. DC are too inconsistent; for every Joker there's a BvS. Marvel are in the process of rebuilding, Star Trek is dead in the water and Star Wars...put a woman in charge. 'Nuff said.

So there's a real opportunity here for Warhammer to step up. They have a huge fan-base and a massive universe to draw on.

In modern Hollywood reality where everything is pussified and suffers SJW influence I would rather not see WH40K hit the big screens.
I wonder if the Eisenhorn series (currently in production I think?) will be any good.

That’s the only thing I can see being any good these days

It should have been made in the mid 2000s

That and the breathtaking costs itd require to put on screen

Lore updates
2 new blood angels books out featuring dante and mephestion
- seems the psychic awakening is actualy magnus doing ! He wants to complete and improve emperors vision of shepherding mankind into a psyker species ....blessed of course sometimes by tzeneech

- dante is still in old man logan mode ....hes too old for this shit and may soon undergo primaris upgrade , has continued using innocent blood to sustain himself and hates it
Wounds nit really healing as astartes should
Despite robute telling him he doesnt need to wear mask anymore he does as he doesnt want how old weak , and tired looking his face has become getting out

-great rift had given birth to new gods who died out as it calmed down , warp travel very dangerous in places now with much higher navigator and astropath burnout rates , hive mind beggining to have presence there ! Nids can calm warp storms with their buggy interference
Mephestion is such a beast he can guide blood angels fleets for longer jumps than most

-Mephestions primarus upgraded and becomes an absolute unit ....can stop/ slow time and resurect the dead ( doesnt though as necromancy will make his brothers fear him more ) he kills eldar pilots by feeding their minds visions of the fall and then telekineticaly clots their hearts

- the blood angels black rage and sanguinor is explained sorta : the blood angels good side ( artistic side, sacrfice to defend the weak etc) feeds an angel of light ( represented by sanguinor) whereas their darker black rage side feeds its counterpart ....fans have theorised that sanguinius was possibly a perfect balanced avatar of both at once somehow and books again hint powerful souls might not die in the warp ( dickteasing sanguinius comeback etc)

Both these beings existed before mankind in the warp etc but dark one slowly getting stronger
Mephestion made aware his op powers are as hes the avatar of the dark and one day will give into the darkside and embody all thats bad within the blood angels ( so ends theory he made pact with gods etc) ..if he rejects this future and ends himself as he kinda wanted the blood angels would be doomed without that 'release tap' of all the dark side mumbo jumbo hes become !!!
He choses life to go on as a necessary monster

I've taken the plunge. I ordered a Grex Genesis XGi3 airbrush and accompanying doodads. I'm getting my warhound legs sanded up so I'll be ready to test on them before working on the warlord. I've also got a few printed rhinos I can start with (far less complex, lots of flat surfaces to practice gradients).

Lorewise Siege of terra reaches first wall
-kharn is now uberpowerful as the gods avatar punching literaly through tanks , finaly fights siggismund whos shown to be clearly the better fighter but cant compete vs kharns new uberchaos roids ......before he can lose dorn shows up and swats kharn away like a bug
Keeler and siggy speak and hes made aware he must embrace being the emperors champion to equal beings like kharn

-malcador concedes emps webway plan has failed but is very interested in the growing new faiths effect in the warp, that while chaos gods are empowered by worship so now is the emperor and mals keen to maybe weaponize this as a poosible longterm winning strategy vs the gods

Horus reveals unless emps is utterly destroyed body and soul hel always potentialy return

Dorn continues to handle stuff like a boss , the good guys mvp not only saves siggy but taunts perty into wanting a one on one fight then and there which is refused

Perturabo and dorns longtime rivalry seems to be theme of the book with both guys second guessing each others plans , perty of course mentions the wall has fallen but dorn reminds him time is ticking and theres still layers of defence to go
Later with the other good guy primarchs he shows this wasnt bluffing ....hes geninely happy that the first line of defences held far longer than he planned and inflicted wayy more casulties than hed ever predicted possible vs perty

All in all its a good day for the good guys ... until magnus final manifests on terra and summons demons comming with him so numerous their multi coloured masses can be seen from space !!!!!!!
