I haven't read the books, but the first five seasons (which had source material) were bigly compelling.
The downturn in the last three seasons has really affirmed one thing more than any other: that human arrogance and out-of-touch-ness has no - fucking - limits. I've said this before with regard to politics (morons thinking their first impressions and partisan reflexes should invalidate the opinions of professional scientific, economic, and policy experts), but not with regard to art.
The creators of the show are undeniably talented directors: they did a wildly successful job of converting good source material (which, from the little that I read of the first book, doesn't necessarily lend to the screen all that well) into on-screen product. But they were extremely faithful (in terms of books to tv standards) to the books to the point of having copied and pasted entire conversations.
Yet, somehow, even despite the considerable backlash for the writing quality of season 7, they
still remained insistent that their skills are what made the series and that their writing was good enough and didn't bring on higher quality writers (like the fucking on in that YT video). But it's not. Their writing is fucking laughably bad.
