Of course his comment was idiotic. I’m responding to you and not him since you have the capacity for thought.
You said you have a huge prison population which proves part of my point. Also, jail is for presentence and prison is post sentencing, so the populations are separate unless things are really dire. Which they are even where I’m at in fucking Maui. So I know NOLA is jammed.
Of course I agree he should be taken off the streets but that doesn’t mean that there are the resources to do so.
As far as the rest of what you say I’m sure it’s true. I know I wouldn’t take a pay cut to work there. When I was still Federal I was stationed in both Baton Rouge and Shreveport at times I know some of the issues there, and eventually I did take a pay cut to work for the local government out here in Hawaii. Now you couldn’t pay me enough to be law enforcement on the mainland. Fuck that, you’re all insane over there. But we deal with a huge homelessness problem here as well.
Anyway, my general point is it isn’t as simple as just “lock him up” and the issues behind that go way deeper than the police department has control over. You yourself are now admitting they need to release murderers, that shows you there isn’t room for this guy. The best solution would probably be some psychiatric hold for the guy, but again, there probably isn’t funding for that either.
