Opinion War Room Government Shutdown over/under predictions

My dreams are coming true
I think I missed the memo on why this would possibly be good.

The average IRS worker’s salary is like 70K, if they’re a customer service person it’s less than 50K. All this is doing is making it harder for normal, middle class families to pay their bills and feed their children.

Because A. The IRS is a dinosaur and should be the first area AI is implemented and automated. B. The Biden era additions were insane in the face of incoming automations. Also not to mention the bogus $600 Venmo language…

You think these upcoming automations will eliminate half the IRS workforce?
And on top of that, don’t want to wait for these automations to actually occur before eliminating a ton of people? That doesn’t seem wise at all.

Not to mention, the funding for all of this (if memory serves) is from the Inflation Reduction Act which Republicans have gutted and are trying to repeal in full.
Makes no sense.

Not only yes, but absolutely over the next 5-10 years more than half of these clerical jobs will be automated.

Biden drastically increased funding to the IRS mostly for personnel. AI will 100% make that even more wasteful than it already is.

Then those jobs should be phased out over the next 5-10 years. You don’t fire half your workforce because you *think they won’t be needed in a decade, that’s insanity.
I believe republicans have cut 1/4 of that funding from the Inflation Reduction Act already.

Sure. Do we need to immediately cut half? No. We could likely cut 1/4 and not feel a thing. Then another 1/4 in a year and likely not feel a thing.

Let me be clear, I’ve been deeply involved in RIFs. No one can sit here and say that the IRS doesn’t have bloat that we can’t stand to cut. Even the most operationally effective companies have bloat that can be cut.

Sure, but one should do some sort of analysis to see where those cuts can be made, something they didn’t do now AFAIK and DOGE didn’t do either.

Let’s not pretend they’re trying to make the IRS more efficient, they haven’t done anything that makes me think that’s the case.

You’d be shocked how little analysis actually is done or has to be done in real life situations.

Eliminating 1/4 the workforce would automatically increase productivity per resource.

And now I'm hearing that Senate Republicans might go for the nuclear option; remove the filibuster.

<NotListening>
They don't have enough votes to push through the legislation but they have enough votes to override the filibuster? If so, the system is stupid AF.

So.... you think that only having enough staff to audit poor people with simple returns so rich people with complex returns never get audited is a good thing?

Got it.

I’m pretty sure studies have shown the exact opposite.
I’m sure they haven’t. It obviously depends on the RIF, but in bloated environments, it will absolutely increase production.

Your position is that there is no bloat in the IRS?

Democrats going to sue Trump so that the troops don’t get paid. Bold strategy. This is going to happen as Trump will be reaching his all time approval rating lol

Shocking. Clip is from a few months ago, hopefully all of these people are among the fired

That’s not very much money. With that number of people that’s 1k apiece?

Political theater from both sides. The Republicans are doing it this way because they don’t want to pass a bill that Democrats would get shared credit for. They could easily do it the right way and there wouldn’t be opposition.

That’s like the generic consultants guide to increasing productivity relative to costs. It works sometimes because yes there are diminishing returns to hiring more workers. Often times you see these companies hire these people back overtime as they need them to do something specific. Then they realize they’re bloated again, hire another consultant that does the same thing often times with very little good decision making going into. And thus the stupid cycle of corporate life goes.

Sure, if the cuts are agnostic and purposeless.

Doing a 10% cut in a lean organization can be rough. Doing a 10% cut in a bloat organization will not even be felt.

Of all of the things to harp on AI about these days.....its potential for cheap monetary regulation and oversight on taxation is astounding. While this would probably eliminate a lot of current bodied jobs, on the whole it would alleviate the financial limitations and a whole host of other intangibles and costs.

You'd still need human final review in a more streamlined and efficient way, but the majority of most tax leg work could be accomplished by computers. And it should be.

Of course, you know damn well that'll be one of the last places it gets used haha
