I think Sweden makes an interesting case study regarding gun laws. We have among the most deaths in the EU linked to gun violence:
The weapons used in these shootings are illegal and smuggled to Sweden from other countries.
At the same time, to become a legal gun owner in Sweden is a tedious ordeal and takes time, dedication, money and even so, the governing bodies take their time to issue a license.
A study between 2000-2010 showed that only two violent crimes were committed by legally obtained weapons in Sweden. Self-defense with legally owned weapons in Sweden is a judicial right but it rarely goes well in the court of law.
A major case was when a 69-year old man shot and killed two brothers that had previously threatened his life and they entered his property, smashed the glass on the front door, which prompted the old man to shoot them through the door. He was sentenced to two years for manslaughter. Two years is still lower than what you normally receive for manslaughter but the point is, the government doesn't want to send a message to the citizens that you will go scott-free if you use guns to protect you and your family.
As for my vote here, I'm for more lax gun laws as long as we are talking about law-abiding and mentally healthy individuals.
