Viruses, oops, new job

To sum it up, unless your work is ran by dudes over 80, you should be fine. Being online is accepted for the most part as part of life these days. You'd have to work with real nazi's and people left a generation or two behind for this to be an issue

I'm going to have to disagree Mr. Rockhard. Most big companies have policies about Online use.Unless it has to do with helping/completing ur job its a no no. From my experiences it usually means termination if u violate it.

I think what your IT department are like has a lot to do with it.

Where I worked they were all pretty cool and they often had to do stuff with the laptops of the Reps we had.
And one of our Reps used to always email through videos and pictures of what was basically porn. I would be sat next to my boss at the time and he'd be showing me these crazy videos.
Nothing ever came of it.

But if you get a bit of a jobsworth twat in your IT department, they could always report the usage to HR or something.

Yup, as well they should.

I had an employee who basically played games on yahoo all day. I once even logged on and joined a game with her just to see how long she would play. I ended up going to her office, not just to fire her but to tell her she sucked at the game we played.

We are actually still friends and laugh about it now.

We couldn't access social media, youtube or betting sites on our systems, they were all blocked.
Which was fine by me, you shouldn't be cocking about with that at work.

The whole HR thing goes a bit far tho. We had an email go round about Facebook where if you stated on there you worked for the company then you could be subject to disciplinary action if you posted anything offensive.
Thing is, with the way the world is now where people seem to be offended by everything (or pretend to be offended as is often the case), then you would be afraid of posting anything on there!

I've heard of people giving their laptop to IT to fix while having a porn DVD in it. They were warned.

My 15 plus years of experience in management would tell me we've never had a single employee fired for internet use. When running a company, internet use is on the bottom of your concerns. Securing work, meeting deadlines/budgets, and quality of work ranks above internet any day of the week. If one of my employees is on Buzzfeed between 3pm and 6pm, yet his work is flawless, meets the budget and is out on time, why the hell would I care if he's internet browsing during his down time? It's 2015, not 1845. Get with the times

btw. Work in engineering, manage roughly 8 employees in a company of 50.

I am with the "times" sir. Over the years I ran across several individuals who lost their jobs because of the Improper use of the Interwebz. One guy got caught peeping porn (that's a gimme) Another person was a facebook fiend. BUT I did notice that was the excuse upper management used because the employee was not wanted by management no longer and the employee had no other faults that could stick so they used that to get rid of them.

You'll be fine unless you were checking fucked up shit.

Your computer shouldn't be getting viruses really though if ye have a decent AV at work.

Just saw you visited sherdog, you're fucked man, that's the pit of the internet.

Never heard of someone getting fired for going on facebook at work. Sounds like BS

porn is a given. I'm talking general internet use (google/ebay/facebook/buzzfeed/twitter/reddit seem to be the big ones in our office)

Our business cares about the employees. Larger companies care about one thing. Profit. It's a horrible way to earn a living, and I feel for anyone working in a company of 100 or more employees. You're basically in the fields, while the 1% is making all the money. Enjoy that.

This is why you need to buy a smartphone.
My company now has a zero tolerance towards external website browsing.

Anything outside the intranet isn't allowed.

I use ma phone doog.

Thank you!

I think people are forgetting you have to get your work done. But if your work is done, done correctly and on time, why would a company give a shit about your internet use. If my job started riding asses and threatening to fire guys over the internet, I'd have about 25 engineers to find to fill their jobs when they left for other companies. I guess the private sector is a lot different than a large corporation who can throw away employees like trash.

Few years back when I worked at a hospital and facebook was starting to get popular it was no biggie. After a while upper management and Adminstration felt that employees were spending a liiiiiittle much too on there. They sent out a mass email saying facebook was now allowed to viewed/used. Some people scoffed.. a few people got tossed and that was that.

So you work for a major health provider??? That explains a lot. Health care is ran like North Korea. Gotta protect those billions.

I used to work for them lol. yea its pretty bad.

congrats on getting out. It's night and day between the company I work for (50 employees) and a major health care network. If it's anything like OhioHealth, I feel for ya
