Wuhan virus: Chinese teen with cerebral palsy dies at home six days after father's quarantine

BEIJING - A Chinese teenage boy suffering from cerebral palsy was found dead at home in Hubei province six days after his father and younger brother were quarantined for suspected infection with a novel coronavirus.

Seventeen-year-old Yan Cheng, his 11-year-old brother and their father Yan Xiaowen, 49, who had been working in Hubei's capital city Wuhan, where thousands of people have been struck by the highly infectious virus, returned to their village in Huahe township on Jan 17, Beijing Youth Daily reported on Thursday (Jan 30).

The virus, first discovered in Wuhan, has since spread to other provinces in China and abroad.

On Jan 24, Mr Yan and his younger son, who was autistic, were quarantined at a treatment centre after showing symptoms of infection. But the quadriplegic Yan Cheng was left alone at home.

Cerebral palsy is a neurological condition caused by brain damage and affects a person's ability to move and maintain balance and posture.

Worried for his son, Mr Yan appealed for help on the Chinese Twitter-like Weibo on Tuesday. But Yan Cheng was found dead a day later.

Yan Cheng's death was confirmed by a Huahe government official, who said a probe has been launched.
"There is no way we will leave a child with cerebral palsy at home unattended," the official was quoted as saying by Beijing Youth Daily.

"But it's a fact that the child has died. The higher authorities will investigate us and there will naturally be a just explanation."

Seriously unreal.... Poor kid was left to die of thirst/starvation.

So long as it’s just a person who came back from Wuhan in the last few weeks it’s not a big issue, if it’s someone who hasn’t left the US and caught it....

well, plague isn’t my preferred apocalypse- zombies would be so much more fun, but I guess it’s better than slowly rising seas forcing us closer and closer
Just to update: Supposedly the confirmed case had traveled to new York and just returned in the last week or so.

It's not going to be the last we hear. Their hospital systems are failing due to overcrowding of patients. People with curable issues are going to take a brunt of this. Need dialysis? Good luck. Need insulin? Good luck.

Zombies are something I could get behind as I've been preparing for this time for years. (Dead Island, Last of us, Dying light). We've already had cases of person to person transmission in the US.

Give me an aluminum bat, some copper wire and a battery pack.

Just to update: Supposedly the confirmed case had traveled to new York and just returned in the last week or so.

just New York?

well fuck

I’m searching and don’t see anything about a case in Georgia tho. Not sure if sherdog is the home to some breaking news here, or this is just some hearsay rumors you’re hearing Bud

Yea, just New York. I haven't seen anything either. I'm hoping it's just some rumor. But the lady that told me is pretty well connected in the community here. Again, at this point it's only hearsay, I don't want to freak anyone out.

Reddit is a good place to see info on this stuff. However, there are obviously going to be incorrect reports there as well. I just read people are saying UGA has 3-4 cases that they aren't reporting in order to not cause a panic. Who knows at this point?

I’m slowing getting a little nervous about this. Probably a 4/10 which I classify as slight to moderate concern.

Just remember the basics and you should be fine. If you feel that your concern will rise, now is the time to prepare. People are already gouging on ebay for crap masks.

This one is sad.

Disinfecting the streets using cement mixers? I guess water trucks but that first one is odd.

it looks like a fucking prison.

Under investigation at this time...

"Potential cases of coronavirus in Georgia are being investigated by the state health department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Georgia Department of Public Health issued a news update Monday, reiterating that no cases of the virus have been confirmed in Georgia, but patient information has been received from healthcare providers in the state about potential cases.

“The situation could change as additional patients are evaluated,” the state department said in the release. “This is a fluid situation where numbers will change and may not reflect the level of risk to the general public, which at this time remains low.”

This was printed in the Marietta Daily Journal on Monday.

This one is sad.

I find this so weird, those 2 old people are there dying, I realise you can't really do anything for them.... but someone actually comes up with the genius idea of making a short clip with some chinese Titanic music and hearts/crying emoticons in them to score some likes
