A husband and wife in San Benito County who were diagnosed with the new coronavirus on Sunday became suddenly much more ill that night and were taken by ambulance to a hospital in San Francisco early Monday, public health officials said.
The man and woman had been self-isolating in their own home since Jan. 24, when the husband returned from a trip to China.
The couple was taken to UCSF, though the university would not say which campus. They are being cared for in isolation, UCSF officials said. Doctors there are specialists in “the care of patients with complex illnesses, including infectious diseases like the novel coronavirus,” UCSF said in a statement. UCSF “also treated patients during past epidemics, such as SARS in 2003.”
San Francisco public health officials said the couple “represent no elevated risk to the public. The hospital is taking all appropriate precautions for patient and staff safety.”
The couple had been in regular contact with public health officials and had been receiving medical treatment in their home until their symptoms worsened, San Benito public health officials said.
